Earlier this week, upon waking up and looking outside, my husband tells me that all my plants were badly infested with "those white cottony bugs you hate". Alarmed, I rushed to inspect my garden and was relieved yet concerned to see that they were ashes. So we had a little laugh over that.

Those ashes will add potassium to the soil.
Pretty tough way to get it though.

You know what I just thought of? Hundreds of years from now, this thread might be valuable data for tracing climate changes and associated feelings. We're experiencing rapid climate change and plenty of pure number data are out there but I think the personal inputs really put things into perspective. Can you imagine generations from now, they'll be reading this and say, "Wow! The average temps for June was only ## back in 2020 and they were complaining! If only we can have that now."

That delicious cool breeze is gone and we're back to humidity. Waaaahhh! And we're still waiting for that promised rain. Maybe on the weekend.

I've not noticed any global warming around here, just cyclical weather over the 30+ years I've been here. Back in '99 I started keeping weather data from the UGA site 3 miles up the road; daily minimums, maximums and rainfall. Pretty cyclical. Here are the min/max temp graphs for July and August since '99:





I do see some correlation between temp upswings and solar maximums (high sunspot activity). We are currently in Solar Cycle #24 which began Dec '08, hit maximum from roughly 2011 through 2015 before sliding back down to solar minimum where we've been since roughly 2018. July 2011 here was a hot one with 29 days of 90+, 17 days of those at 95+ and a few 100's sprinkled in there with only 0.97" of rain.

Well, we are enjoying the fallout of what are now being called 'climate fires' burning up the west coast of the US.

For days now we have been smelling the smell of homes and towns going up in smoke in Oregon and forest fires in Washington State. So awful for so many people and, no, I don't believe it is because Californians do not rake their forest floors.

Our skies are full of smoke. Looks like a foggy fall morning out there. Another day to stay inside or wear my COVID mask if I want to check the garden or go to the library.

Puny earthlings, this is only the beginning.
Wait until the tidal waves, super volcanoes and earthquakes start.

It's been terribly wet here. Raining almost every day for a week and a half.

I wish I could send it West. I hate seeing what's happening there.

Just when you think it can't get much worse for smoke here in Vancouver rating a 10+ we now have creosote in the air from a very large pier fire in nearby New Westminster ....... no longer red - but purple warning

and rather cool as the sun can't get through the haze

What a nightmare.

We are enjoying the cool breeze from Sally east of us (I hope that our Alabama and Florida panhandle neighbors are faring OK). New Orleans have dodged about 4 major hurricanes in the past two years, hopefully people aren't getting complacent about hurricane preparations in the future. But we are SO close to fall and the end of hurricane season, it is only supposed to be 78F next Monday!

Sally exiting the Gulf of Mexico region and I’m sure that’s a relief. SIL and husband were in Destin, FLA. for the landall and it was pretty rough.

Something now brewing out in the Bay of Campeche. Models at the moment have it by and large as a Mexico storm, but it’s too early to tell. Tropical storms and Hurricanes tend, if the past is a guide, not to come to Texas after mid September, but you just never know. That coastline in Mexico once you get beyond the border just below Texas is sparsely populated so that might be the less bad spot to put a storm. Or below Corpus Christi and above Brownsville is another good place, mostly just south texas brushland, the king ranch, and about 50 people and 100,000 rattlesnakes there.

Storms in the Gulf of Mexico generally mean pain for someone, no chance of a recurve out to sea.

Can't remember the name of the hurricane but had the opportunity to ride my motorcycle with about a 60 mile an hour wind.
It was like riding in a vacuum.
Running into the wind was like going 120.
No windshield on my bike.
Then the dreaded side wind where you have to be learned to one side but be ready for a slack up of the wind.
Lots of fun almost like flying.

The last of Sally passed through last night and this morning. It started raining yesterday afternoon but just .7". Then we got another 5.8" by noon today and one inch more after lunch. I think that's it. 7.5" in 24 hours. The lower part of the garden where the field peas are is under 2" of water but they'll probably be ok. The okra and two squash, however, are where an old single wide used to be and that area was dug out 6" by the previous owner and is now slap full of water. Those plants are doing the back stroke! All in all, we're fine.

Tonight it rained a little - the leftover from Sally, which is not much at all, for this area. Only .18", so far, but little more comming. Supposedly, it's going to get sunny the next couple of days, but that haze high in the atmosphere from the west coast fires has kept us overcast for over a week. Prayers and positive thoughts for those out there, in those areas.

We are having Sally overnight tonight. Up to 150 mm expected in some areas, but we should get a bit less here. They said to expect to be woken up by heavy rain and wind between 2 am and 9 am. To put that in perspective, [mention]GoDawgs[/mention] 7.5 inches is 190 mm.
I have seen roads wash out here with 90 mm rain, even spaced over a couple of days.
20 mm is a good drink.
40 mm is a heavy drink.
Anything over 40mm on one day, is a night on the town! By local standards that is. Who knew we were so temperate!
150 mm rain is maybe as much as I've ever seen here in 24 hours. And yet we are chronically cloudy and notoriously wet, but don't seem to get the same level of downpours that some folks are used to, at all. We mainly get a good drink on a regular basis.

It's going to be down to 48° tonight, 46° tomorrow night, and 48° Sunday night, so tonight my curry tree came onto the back porch - they don't like it below 50°. Usually it's the middle of October when they come in; soon, I have to get prepared.

Went to Galveston for lunch yesterday. Tropical Storm Beta is out there but thank goodness it is not a monster storm. The forecast here is for some wind and lots of rain. The rain has started.
There were lots of people on the beach enjoying themselves.

It's probably one of the most pleasant days today in a really long time.
Looks like a very good chance of rain Monday and Tuesday too.
Looks like a rain band from Beta will be the reason maybe.
I know the armadillos are enjoying the rain so they can dig for grubs in my forest yard.
