How do you know you're not being ripped off by the clerk?
The other day I had one charge me for a bottle of water I didn't have.
I called him out on it.
He said he didn't know how to take it off my card.
I said well I'll just go get the water if I bought it.
And I did.
I'm curious as to how a bottle of water ended up on my card in the first place.
He didn't scan a bottle of water.
One idiot complained about how much lunch cost.
It was over 30 dollars and it was all sugary trash he bought at the convenience store.
He does this every day and he lives at home with his mom at 24 years old.
No girl friend.

There are enough things at WalMart without a price label, but scanners are nearby.

The latest is blocking the out in the open scanners with a huge pallet. It may not be on purpose, because there are many new workers at the local store, and they may not be aware of what they're doing. There's no way of blocking the in-aisle scanners without raising suspicion.

Back during my buy everything I could find tramontina at WalMart years ago I checked the price on a small kettle set.
A stainless skillet pan a small kettle a larger kettle and a much larger kettle.
Price 6 dollars and some odd cents.
Works for me and I still use them many years later.
It all started from a George Foreman electric grill I got for Christmas I had zero use for.
So I took if back and traded it in for a big triclad bottom kettle complete with strainer basket and steamer.
I was so hooked on these things I drove all the way to Austin to get the 16 quart one Bastrop Walmart didn't have.
But I digress.
I can't stand self checkouts.
I guess it's from me growing up and the rascals took the groceries to the car for you.
And you could get 5 loaves for a dollar and cereal was 12 cents a box.
Chicken wings were practically free.

The few scanners they have in the grocery section at our WalMart don't work and haven't for a long time. I usually have to find someone stocking a shelf (ha ha!) and ask them to scan it with their handheld thing. Most are fine with doing that but there's always some nimrod who seems perturbed at being asked to help. Talk about wanting to put a foot up somebody's butt.....

The best people to ask are the ones with the giant carts pulling pick up orders, They know where everything is and are glad to scan stuff.

My mom was a short French wildcat.
She beat the hell out of me when I was 17.
She poured water on me when I was sleeping as a joke.
I threw a cowboy boot at her.
The heel with steel horseshoe taps hit her on the shin and hurt her leg and she chased me through the house and cornered me.
Then the beating started.
It was all over in seconds and we were friends again and laughed about it.

The best ones are the ones that are entrusted with the wheeled ladders. They know where everything is, and can get it, too.

I'm going to relive a childhood meal, one I haven't had in about 50 years. My parents wouldn't swear, so you might know where this chipped beef of a story is going.

Hormel dried beef, by the pound it is $18.68 at WalMart, but comes in a 2.5 ounce jar, so the price is under 3 dollars. There are 1,210 mg of sodium per 1 oz serving! I'll likely buy a couple of jars, and experiment. One experiment would be to soak the slices in near simmering water for awhile, to see if some of the salt can be removed, and to see if the slices start falling apart. I also might weigh the slices on a digital scale pre and post soak to see how much weight was gained. Another experiment would be in making the white sauce. To add a dash of nutmeg, or no? I'm skipping what in the late 60s likely would have been Wonder bread. I'll use some honey wheat bread, toasted to a deep golden brown.

Oh, yeah, the price increased from about $12-13/lb, pre-Covid days, the last time I looked at the jars.

They had that stuff but with ground beef seemingly every day in the Marines I think for breakfast.

You can get three times as many Lil Dutch Maid crackers as you can Nabisco crackers for almost the same price.
And they are just as good if not better.

They were under a dollar.
Nabisco 3.69.

In the work cafeteria they had a beef/pea/stuff mixture one day and they just labeled it SOS. i laughed and asked it the last word was shingle. I was one of the few who knew the name, i guess.

I bought salt beef awhile back with the same drive to recreate a nostalgic meal. Ended up in the freezer...

My Mom likes crackers and digestive biscuits. I have a long list of brands she just won't tolerate. The best biscuits, coincidentally, are the ones with no additives in the ingredient list. Plain and good, not the fancy brand.
I pretty much stopped buying crackers when Lays put out multigrain nacho chips.

I still have to work on my buckwheat pancakes, then it's on to baking my own crackers.

I've always wanted to bake my own crackers at least once.
But at a dollar a box it's hard to justify.
My wife loved goldfish crackers I can't stand the things.
What I use crackers for is a work snack with water and making cracker flour in my food processor.
In the old days the lady next door made us kids peanut butter and honey cracker snacks.

I stopped buying crackers when I discovered mini shredded wheat. Healthier ingredients than found in crackers. No added oils, just whole wheat and they are usually a better buy.

I like saltines with tuna or chicken salad. Raw oysters with red sauce and horseradish or smoked oysters on saltines, that’s good stuff. Crushed saltines to add to the coating for weiner or pork schnitzel, another good use for saltines.

As a kid dry shredded wheat was another snack that was given to us.
I still like it.

I use them to suck up sardine juice and smoked oysters too.

Hours I have spent drooling over fancy cracker recipes.... too many. (at least four! )

Ryvita is a great cracker. I respect the old water crackers too. Very plain but perfectly baked and just ready to complement something tasty.
I can't stand the taste of palm oil, so most other crackers are one and done. Saltines have always been good simple fare.

Shredded wheat and shreddies were my two favorite cereals as a kid. With brown sugar and milk. Uh oh... nostalgia food again... I would eat that for supper if it was in the kitchen now!
