I'm working around someone that didn't know the sun came up in the east.
He said they didn't teach it n school.
I find that hard to believe.
I'm finding this trend to be more and more common.

I did have a Boston dentist not know the berries growing across the lane from his Cape Cod cottage were delicious blackberries. He assumed they were poisonous. Seems like knowledge of the natural world has diminished.

No not messing with me.
These younger people are about as ignorant as can be.
They've spent there entire lives in the digital word of worthless stupidity
The guy was petrified of getting past the 2nd step of a ladder.
They are clumsy and have little knowledge of anything in the physical world.
Lost without GPS he said he didn't know how to read a map.
He and others have said the reasons for not knowing anything is they didn't teach it or have classes.
I told him he was playing the victim card.
It was his lack of desire to learn anything.
Not someone else's fault.
The 17 year old working with me is light years ahead of these guys.
By the way he turned 18 the other day.

Now that I think about it I was taking apart and putting back together a 60 thousand dollar machine when I was 24.
Any mistake meant total disaster and possibly death or injury.
I had to set this thig up several times a day.
I just can't wrap my mind around the lack of responsibility these people have.
Complete and total lack of curiosity.
The smart phone and social media has become a pacifier for these people.
They simply can't put it down.

I wonder if people overall are less curious than they used to be? There’s always been people that lack any curiosity about almost everthing around them, but are the numbers much higher these days? I like to know some basic information like where the sun rises and sets or how to read a map, but maybe the people that are gamers and such none of that matters.

I don’t think my wife could point to the north or east or west, but maybe I’m not giving her enough credit. I’m going to try this on her this morning. Point to the east, honey. Wonder what finger she will use and which way it will be pointed!

On another gardening forum a lady showed me aa picture of her house she moved into in Elgin.
I told her where she lived and what subdivision it was.
I also told her what direction it was pointing.
She was flabbergasted.
Then I explained to her how I did it.
I've done this to two other people on gardening forums.
If I can do it other people can too.

you have heard the saying, its not the size of the dog in the fight, its the size of the fight in the dog.
it applies to birds in some cases too.
on the way home from work the other day, i saw a mature crow, being harassed by a bird smaller than a robin.
the crow must have gotten too close to the smaller birds territory or nesting site. i watched the smaller bird
dive bombing the crow. it looked like it might have even landed on the crows back, maybe giving it a peck on the head
a couple of times. it would be like comparing a 5lb yorkie going after a hundred plus lb mastiff or great dane.
what a hoot.

@rxkeith that must have been entertaining to watch. I've sat and watched crows get very territorial with seagulls and send them all packing and also ganging up on birds of prey for in-flight dog fights. To see a smaller bird harass a crow must have been hilarious.

Just found out we had another very long term employee give his notice.
Sick of it and moving back to Utah.

While visiting my Hancock, MI dwelling in-laws, I had the rare good fortune to be able to drop in on fellow Tomato Junction participant @rxkeith, who resides in their neck-o-the-woods...literally!

He gave me the tour of his nice-sized...and dutifully well-protected, operations. Until they were removed to the safety of the indoors, his chickens began helping themselves to the tomatoes I brought.

After a very pleasant visit, he sent me on my way with a MESS of marvelously beautiful Blue Ribbon and Jumbo Beans, some of which have been roasted and the rest of which will be made into Dilly Beans; can't hardly wait!

it was a nice visit in deed gotch.

let me tell you folks, if you happen to be in my neighborhood, you have gone way out of your way to get here.
the gotch found me with some of that badger perseverance. my son was able to rescue the tomatoes from our
free ranging chickens. they really like tomatoes, cucumbers, and salad on the hoof. most of the tomatoes have been
consumed by the non feathered residents of the household.
the beans, i had just picked. the gotch was nice enough to take some along. our fridge is starting to resemble a suitcase
that you have to sit on to close. hope you enjoy the beans gotch.

meeting the gotch in person cleared up a question i had in my mind. does he talk the way he writes?
nope, he speaks like a normal person lol. i hope you enjoyed your time in da U.P. gotch. safe travels home.

I've traveled back-roads FAR_TOO_MANY to name...many unmarked...like precious few were enroute.

It was confirmed today what I thought I saw yesterday; while running on Hwy 122 this morning I saw (and helped out of the roadway) the 1st Woolly Bear Caterpillar of the year.

This means summer's end is in the On Deck Circle.

Granted, Saxon TWSP is at 46.4933° N, where winter rules and they measure snow in feet (with an F!), it still seems a tad early.

Glass half full?

It was all orange.

"If the caterpillar has more orange, then the winter will be mild. A wide orange band means winter will be mild. More black than orange means winter will be severe."

I'm at Lat. 40 plus and am seeing early signs also. One of the small lakes I fish has begun to turn over. This does not happen when water temps are in the upper 70's low 80's. Did the excessive heat bring this on. Don't know but it is turning over. We've had some low 60's lately which might have triggered it.

Headed up your way on Thurs. Were on the southern portion of the Eagle River chain, Lat.46. Just my wife, me and the water. Haven't been up since mid June. Told the family not to to show up. Sometimes you just need quiet. She fishes bass, I fish northern, were always buttin heads so it might not be all that quiet.

Today? Not so much; ~four foot/~1.22 meter rollers.

a pharmacist i worked with down state had moved back up to da U.P.
she had a house built on the shore of da big lake. she had consulted someone i forget
who about how far from shore she should build her home. she took the advice she was given
and doubled it. one of those november storms came along, and 47 feet of her back yard went bye bye.
she had to have a pile of boulders dumped along the shore to prevent further erosion.
she and her husband now live in a big ole house on top of a hill with a beautiful view of lake superior.
on a clear day, you can see the shadow of isle royale. you can also see the storms come rolling in on the
bad weather days.

Lake Superior contains 10% of the earth’s surface fresh water. Lake Superior contains more water than all the rest of the great lakes combined and then some. Only Siberia’s 25 million old Lake Baikal has more water. Lake Superior has enough water, three quadrillion gallons, to cover all of north and South America with 1 foot of water.

All this and more and Lake Superior is only 10,000 years old, nothing as compared to the geological history of the earth.

Both myself and the lovely and long suffering Mrs. Gotch refer to Lake Superior as The Gitch AKA Gitche Gumee; TH GITCH also happens to be my license plate.

Three weeks earlier, we (along with our dear, departed and sorely missed Good Golden Girl, Hurley) took our "departure walk" on a magnificently calm and sunny morning which also happened to be our anniversary, June 21st.

Always one desiring to "hit the road," Mrs. Gotch wanted to cut our walk short in order to get back home ~ half an hour sooner.

In a rare moment of disagreement, I suggested we press on because we'd better remember spending an extra half hour continuing rather than getting back home sooner.

I'm forever thankful she relented, because three weeks later to the day was July 11th; the three of us (Hurley passed in 2019) never had the opportunity again.
