"because it was a holiday week" You worked almost a full 8 hour day extra and didn't get paid for it??? I'd be heading down the road. Obviously you have a wide variety of skills at a high level that someone else would be glad to pay you fairly for.

At least in Texas if you get a paid holiday you have to actually work 40 hours to start getting paid overtime.
I distinctly remember a situation my company was in I used to work for.
It was another labor day week.
I got my 8 hours holiday pay and the owner said I don't care pay him meaning me overtime for every hour over 8.
I would get to work at 7:00 AM and work 8 hours with one crew then that crew would leave as another one took it's place meaning I was working 16 hours a day.
I did it for a week putting in a new fire extinguishing system in a turbine generator south of Houston.
Conduit and all.
On top of that they caught the turbine on fire 3 times and dumped my system after each time I had to haul the high pressure halon bottles to north Houston to get filled then back to reinstall.
The head man of that particular plant love me and never complained if I drove to a Cafe 10 miles down the road to eat in Danbury.
One time I got called off my job to do some silly thing that took no time at all.
He said to the idiot look what you cost me.
After we were away from said idiot I told the guy I'm not charging you anything I'll just put it on a project I'm on.

When he retired we asked our company to give him a gift for our appreciation.
They said no we don't do such things.
So we as a group 4 of us on our own bought him dinner at the Danbury Cafe and bought him a new Calcutta fishing reel.
Those things start at around 200 dollars.
The guy had tears in his eyes when we gave it to him and he knew we paid for it not the company.

Not sure if this is what he means but in a lot of jobs you only get time and a half for actual hours worked over 40 so in a holiday week you have 8 hours that don't count towards that and you only get straight pay for it.

One of the better workers quit yesterday.
We can't hire as fast as they quit.
This time it was the young lady.
We're pretty much down to lazy people for help.
One guy bragged about having the easiest job.
All he had to do is sit at the panel and push buttons all day.
The reason he's doing it is he's too stupid to do anything else.

We took my wife’s stepmom to the doctor yesterday in the big city. Driving around in that place is an adventure on its own. One absolutely insane driver had one arm out the window making all kinds of gestures and running everyone off the road, good times. Saw maybe 1/2 dozen wrecks, yep, that’s fun too. What a zoo. Cannot believe I used to live there.

Anyhow, the stepmom wanted a Whataburger before we dropped her off back at home. Two cars total ahead of us in the drive through. We get to the order and I order for the stepmom, my wife and myself weren’t eating anything. Stepmom wants a hamburger, fries and a coke “We out of french fries” is what I hear. That would have been my sign to make a hasty exit, but it wasn’t about me.

Anyway, two cars with two occupants each ahead of us in the line and we wait and we wait and we wait. At least 20 minutes we wait to get our hamburger, minus the fries. I’ve never seen anything like it. There’s two employees in the window having the best of times, carrying on, laughing, I’m just glad I didn’t order anything. We would have given exact change, but the amount given by the employee was unintelligible. Getting change alone was a two minute ordeal. I didn’t say a word, why would I?

Fast food and the fast food business as it is now can’t die soon enough.

Yesterday they sent out an email threatening us with up to being fired if we don't work overtime.
Not unless we have a good excuse.
These guy don't give a hoot about being fired.
They could go flip burgers for more money.
The only reason they won't flip burgers is because they would have to work.

51.5 hours this week.
I could have had 70 or more if I wanted to.
I responded to before mentioned email as well as another guy I'm working with did also.
There was a reply from the head manager stating the email didn't apply to us.
And he said he should have been more clear.
In my email I stated that I was getting up at 3:15 AM and getting to work at 5:AM.
This to get ahead of the inspections so we could pass them.
No way could I go to another job at 4:30 PM and work till midnight.

For other reasons AND that, would be why I haven't been to any of those places in over 30 years.

Growing up we had locally owned little drive ins we ate at.
Never really had a chance to eat at the big corporate chains like Burger King and the likes.
There was an A&W in one town and a Sonic in another.
But for the most part we got our burgers at restaurants where you had a waitress and was served correctly.
MAC'S drive in, in crane Texas was the bomb.
It was across the street from me.
I could order the fried chicken dinner with fries and a drink.
Go back across the street to my little apartment and eat the whole thing.
There was a car hop there for awhile that lived next to me.
I took her out a few times before her father packed the two girls up and moved away in the middle of the night.
I was broken hearted. :(
She was one of those girls that was so pretty she would make you run off the road.
Natalie Wood pretty.
Very responsible too not the regular idiots that age.

There used to be a Dog-N-Suds Drive-In a coupla miles from our house well over 50 years ago.

Their (IMO) best item? Hands down the Über Sweet Root Beer, served in a large cone-shaped container with a thick, frothy head, and guzzled-with-gusto while sitting contentedly on our bike seats.

With seven (7) kids on a state salary, soda was a luxury we had to buy on our own. It couldn't have too expensive, because this was pre-regular employment (Milwaukee Journal paper route @age 12), but whatta rare treat on a hot summer day!

I like going to a sit down restaurant with good service. A waiter or waitress that is a real person and has some spark, seems to enjoy what they do, and are glad that you are there. My town, that type of service is pretty hard to find.

My son works at the college food bank. This is not a hoity toity type of college. @worth1 probably remembers the school. There’s some genuine need.

Anyway, the food bank hires a new kid, all the employees have to be students in good academic standing. The new hire came over from a local restaurant where he was the manager…manager at $10/hour. How does a place have people in positions of responsibility and only paying $10/hour? That’s why the new hire quit the old job, topping out at manager for $10/hour, no tips, either for the manager, that’s a very low ceiling. Not a tipping, table service type of restaurant. If $10 is all a place can afford to pay a manager, let alone anyone else, then why does it even stay in business? I’ve worked in a short order restaurant, it’s definitely not a cushy sit on your hands scene. People that answer the phone and not much else at my wife’s work make way more an hour.

Seems like most of the fast food place around here are like this. Hot, grueling work behind greasy flatops blazing ovens, and splattering fryers, general chaos, angry customers, and slave wages. Do I want to support something like that, not so much. There are exceptions, of course.

This guy isn't worth minimum wage much less 10 dollars an hour but I bet he's getting paid more.
Been seeing him for months and this is what he does 90% of the time.
He got caught by the head vampire the other day.
The whole crew was doing the same thing.

The company I worked for there wanted to send me to that college and continue on the get my engineering degree.
Mechanical or electrical my choice.
All expenses paid by the company.
Unfortunately my wife wanted to move back to Austin.
To this day I'm ticked about it.
Not for sure about now but there was a whole slew of systems designed and installed by me in those plants signed off by another engineer.

Because they put carpet down.
It's ridiculous because most everyone just wear the things all the time and they are more dirty on the bottom than regular shoes.

The other thing about this bunch of Apple people from California is their ridiculous stereotyping of Texas.
All the different offices have Mexican food names or some such rot.
Crap like tacos and guacamole, tequila and lime.
Heaven forbid they name one chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes.
Or maybe collard greens and ham hock.
Better yet schnitzel and kartoffelpuffers.
From these idiots you'd think all we ate was Mexican food.

my wife had a great uncle that worked as an engineer for a company once he got out of the military.
he didn't have a degree, but he had the knowledge, probably did on the job training back then.
now a days, if you don't have a degree, you don't get in. i like to think that having the ability to learn,
and having common sense counts for something.

My wife's grandfather ran away from home in Arkansas had a 7th or 8th grade education and became an engineer for Marathon oil company.
Self educated.
He and I hit it off so well like the family had never seen before.
I was ony 23 when he died but we had so much in common.
I still have all his old tools that his wife gave to me after he died.
She and I got along great also, she was in her 80's and as mean as a rattlesnake with rabies.
We would go off by ourselves and drink whiskey and swap tales.
She gave me her old pressure cooker that is over 100 years old and I still use it.
