Potatoes: some of what I get here may not be available to most of you, so for you to see what I have (scrubbed and washed as necessary)

The Carisma is a white fleshed/white skinned low GI potato, good for diabetics apparently, this one about average size.
The New Kidneys are purple skinned white flesh that can develop some streaks of colour in the flesh. These are small due in part to the crazy season and being planted in pea straw, will keep some aside for planting in soil next year. They should be able to grow to about 200mm/8 inches long

Kestral is a white flesh/white skinned with purple eyes potato that cooks very well in the microwave. Most should be about the size of the Carisma, but are about the size of the one shown here due in part to soil lock up. Had to water bed to dig them and still bent tynes on two cheapish forks.

Boards are 100 mm/4 inches wide for size referrence

Picked the first of the sweet corn tonight and had them for dinner, these from the plants purchased in punnets.

One interesting thing about this variety is that where one ear formed originally, one or two other ears have formed. As there is no pollen left in tassels, I have picked them for baby corn.

Still picking some baby corn, but ears are getting smaller. I suspect that some of he plants are putting out extra ears over and above what they normally would in response to me picking the first two ears as a survival mechanism.

Have come across and ordered several popcorn varieties that put out 6 ears, an improvement over this lot, but still not as good as Chires

Reckon the baby corn is about done, thinking that I will pull it out either today or tomorrow. Roughly 4.5 lb into freezer , which I am happy with considering that the plants were just random popcorn plants not breed for baby corn production

the first of several lots of popcorn advertised as being able to produce 6 ears per plant arrived today. From memory, two more lots on order, may very well pass on growing sweet corn for the next couple of years to play around with pop/baby corn a bit.

Burgundy Blush,

Another potato, this one with coloured flesh. Do not know much about it, purchased through "The Lost Seed" as was the NZ Kidney for those curious. Again grown in pea straw, will go into soil next season, feel that they will do better there.

Managed to pick another 3/4 lb of baby corn, so roughly 5.5 lb or about 2.5 kg off the 110 plants of an unknown variety. Kids happy, more for them to eat. At $6 per 125 grams of $48/kg I don't get it often normally.

Second lot of popcorn has arrived, with two more on order, still have to order another lot that is advertised as being able to produce 6 ears/plant. Might do a randomised plot of all varieties next year and see what comes out of the seeds.

In amongst, watering, tying up the tomatoes and a bit of mowing, I grabbed a few fruit of the tomatoes. A Black Krim that went nearly 400g or 13.85 oz. A MS that went 150g/5.25 Oz and some Apollo's, the one pictured of typical size going 114 g or 3.9 Oz.

Dug out the baby corn plants today, found a few more ears, about five ounces worth.

Have been hunting around for different popcorn varieties available here and came across a commercial supplier that has a few varieties that produce more than 5 ears per plant. Seems prepared to send me some seeds, time will tell but hopeful.

Sweet Corn.

Those of you whom have followed this thread will recall that I had three varieties that we left in punnets for too long, One, Klevedon Glory produced only the odd cob on weedy plants, these cobs went into the baby corn mix.

The second, Golden Bantam, has produced a few small cobs of half size plants while the third, which I need to double check the of namehas done very well, producing full cobs that are delicious.

Kang Kong,

This sweet potato relative, grown for its leaves is really doing well, the odd flower appearing, which will hopefully produce seed and we are getting all the leaves the young fellow can eat off it and then some

Japanese Onion Tomato.

I have had of this one from another Aussie for a number of years, but had not gotten around to growing it. A good tasting yellowish -orange, will get a bit darker than they appear in the photos. Very fleshy, extremely thick walled, all liked it here and surprisingly dry. Seed pulp comes out as one block very easily. Reckon that a good yellow to orange sauce could come out of this. Plants are around the meter high mark and loaded with fruit,

Costulto Genovese 'Brokenbar'

A few of these wonderful tomatoes, seeing how our environment seems to suit them, good for sauce and fresh eating here and even the grubs like them.

Bogatyr Maslov

Some nice big fruit on these two plants, this one not fully ripe but well ahead of the rest on the plants here, everything is late this season due to the weather. just over a pound.

King Humberto

Seems to me that the source of this years plants may be a bit mixed or crossed, one is a plum and the other a largish cherry

UK 2000

One that is talked about a bit by former Ozgrow members is UK 2000, a tomato of UnKnown origins found on beside a a dissused dairy back in 2000. Fairly typical size for a supermarket type here, the first one is sitting on the fridge awaiting its fate...

Volvo's Daughter

Last season, as it applies to Queensland here, member @Volvo had a cross turn up in some Black Beauty plants growing at his daughters. He sent me some seed from one of these plants which was crossed and ripened to a dark shouldered brown. That colour has come through in the first fruit to ripen (I planted three plants) and I picked the two most advanced fruit today. Looking forward to trying these.

Candy Cane pepper, this one a plant grown from seed from a glued flower, good variegation on the plant and a lot of striped fruit on a short plant.

Flavor Burst, a long distance traveler to get to me, plants are doing wonderfully, have grown well and have a good crop on them.

Sweet Datil, 2 plants of this were overwintered. They suffered and did not do well, but survived and have grown out well since. They have a good crop of small (about 1 inch long) very thin walled fruit that are not suited to our tastes, will probably pull them shortly.

Marconi Rosso,

the tallest of the new plants, and probably the tallest peppers I have grown are the Marconi Rosso's. A nice crop on each plant, still a way off ripening though.
