Lighter green suggests the organic plants had less nitrogen available to them. I wonder if, like with applying manure on organic farms, only a portion of the organic nitrogen is mineralised into plant available inorganic forms in the first growing year.

This study seems to suggest that could be the case. They looked at fish meal, blood meal, feather meal and seabird guano. After 8 weeks only 54-70% of the organic nitrogen had been mineralised:

PRO-MIX® Compressed Premium Moisture Potting Soil Mix - 2 cu. ft.

Got one of these PRO-MIX bags at Walmart. I think it was around $12. The contents are fine grained, no sticks or forest products that I could see. It came very dry and takes a while to hydrate due to the peat. Other than that it looks like quality stuff.

Home Depot carries the Kellogg soil. Got a couple bags of the outdoor potting mix. Almost as good as the PRO-MIX but it had a much larger proportion of small sticks and other coarse forest products like bark.

I've been much happier buying 10lb blocks of coir from the local nursery, hydrating it and mixing with perlite and aged manure compost. About a 2-1-1 ratio. Cheaper too. Just need something to mix in. I use my wheelbarrow

I've opened up one of my 3 bags, I like it so far, everything I've potted up into it seems happy enough. Bags were $9.99 at my menards.

One of the benefits of legal Medical Cannabis in Oklahoma is the amount garden centers now. There's a large Grow Generation warehouse store not far from my house that has the 2.0 cu. ft. bags of Happy Frog Potting Mix and the 1.5 cu. ft. bags of Ocean Forest for around $12. That is incredibly inexpensive for great potting mix. I've seen those same bags on sale for more than $20 per bag at other stores. My tomatoes loved both of those mixes last year.

@wxcrawler that’s an insane price! I just paid $15 for 12 quarts of Ocean Forest, and the large bags were something like $36 if I remember correctly.

I wish I had a few to chose from around here but we are small town america so we pay high prices for things.
