I had no idea that there are so many beautiful varieties of Amaryllis. We usually see red, white or pink ones for sale in winter.
No one tries growing Amaryllis in the ground here. We have to let them go dormant in the house and not water until they have had a good rest. (I did try one once very close to the house and the bulbs multiplied lots but never bloomed.)
After growing outside and blooming last summer I once more put the current one into the garage to overwinter. This spring, after it started growing again I thought I'd best repot it into a larger pot but I found that it had no roots except a few new ones starting so back into the one gallon it went. I was surprised by that but remember that the ones we buy in a box here at Christmas time always have no roots.

Do they always lose their roots when dormant while potted? Anyone know?
Perhaps it was just a bit too cold in the garage and maybe it just doesn't matter.

[mention]Growing Coastal[/mention] the roots would be associated with the old bulb which grew and flowered last year. This year's replacement bulb will put out roots with the new leaves/flower spike

[mention]Growing Coastal[/mention] like you, I have to bring mine in for the winter. It sounds like you have a nice little micro-climate where they will survive your winters. That's great!

The bulbs go dormant for the winter and yes that includes the roots, although many times when I repot in spring the bulbs will have nicely formed roots. If the basal plate (the plate where the roots come from) is bigger than 1/2-3/4" I will cut it off to rejuvenate it. The plants will perform so much better. I feed mine with high phosphate fertilizer.

Individual blossoms last only a couple of days, but each stalk contains many blossoms, so the whole display goes on for several weeks.

Mine seem to be intermittent repeat bloomers.

In my area amaryllis bulbs are planted in the ground outside. They naturalize and their bloom time is around Easter.

However in the fall you can find the bulbs at big box stores, normally in some kit that has a pot and some kind of soil in it. Those will bloom around Christmas. After that I plant those Christmas blooming bulbs in the ground and they will "cycle" to bloom around Easter in the years thereafter.

This year I bought five of the Christmas blooming bulbs at a big box store for $6.99 each. A good deal.

This one just opened its blossoms and it is called Tinkerbell. Ruffled petals.

Hubby bought this one for me and here it is in all its glory! It came in plastic netting, was 8" tall with a flower bud showing, and no new roots!!!! I have to wonder if having no roots is causing it to be under 12" tall, and I love that I don't have to use an ugly stake to support it.

Here's mine "Papillio" opened today ..... was hoping it would bloom for Christmas ......

@PNW_D I just love those stripes but most of all the deep colored throat. So many of them have green or light colored throats these days and I prefer them to be dark like Papillio.

In my climate amaryllis bulbs planted in the ground and left outside year round will cycle to bloom around Easter every year. So this Apple Blossom is right on time.

I bought two bulbs not that long ago at a large garden center. They grew really fast.

Amaryllis "Tinkerbell." Note the ruffled petals. Since these purchased bulbs were bred to bloom around Christmas, they did, but in my climate they will not bloom again until around Easter 2024. In my climate amaryllis are grown outdoors, mostly in the ground, and always bloom around the Easter season.

The first of the spring amaryllis to bloom. They usually bloom "around" Easter.

I like this variety because it has so many blossoms per stem. This is with two stems. Amaryllis "Tinkerbell."

@SpookyShoe Yours looks to be the real deal too. There are so very many Apple Blossom imposters these days that it's getting very hard to find.

Actually, I bought the bulbs, three of them, several years ago at Home Depot. They were labeled "Pink Garden Amaryllis."

I've been calling them Apple Blossom, because I assumed that is what they were.
