It would be difficult to narrow the list down...
The One. One is all that is needed.
I see The other shark has entered the pond.

Ohh, yes, the one and only shark. I have had to hunt elsewhere since Quint went into hiding last year with his little boat. I'm hungry this year...
So far my list would be close to yours, MissS, adding Black Krim, JD's special and some others.

For anyone new:
Tormato is the captain of the boat Orca, filled with all those lovely packets of tomato & other seeds (Tormato has been in charge of the big seed swap in past years). The hungry shark is Imp, wanting to get all the seeds from that boat. Other sharks are in the water too, yearning for seeds.

ah haaaaaaaa!... Thanks Nan for clarifying and confirming my thinking along those lines

Gee, Nan never knew there were other sharks, thought everyone else were the town folk, waiting to be saved (get seeds) by Tormato/ Quint and Brody/MissS?
There was only the one shark in the original movie, so I am confused now??!!

Ok, I'll admit I'm late to the party and didn't have the patience to read everyone's comments but for me Rebel Yell is a must, and ISPL. I'm also in love with Momotaro OP which I got from the secret seed cartel and have saved my own seeds.
I understand the addiction to getting more and more seeds. Just doing that myself as we speak!

WHAT!!! Only 54 Must Grow tomatoes? There are many more Must Grow tomatoes out there that you MUST try.
nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo … those are the ones I wrote down from the tomato junction forum.
I have an actual spreadsheet categorised under
Heart
Pink
Green
Orange
Yellow
Red
Black/Purple
White
Bicolor
Striped
Dwarf (e.g. Dwarf Project)
Cherry
and added some of the suggestions. I just checked that my ´tentative´ list is now at 96 varieties… still have until mid March before I start sowing. Best to finalize end Feb. Or I will be in an utter state of panic!
But do keep any MUST GROW suggestions coming.
Thank you for the extra input… keep them flowing =)
No need to panic, ever.
96 is a good start if they're balanced across many categories, which will hopefully give you the widest selection of flavors.
After that, it's either the dartboard or pick from the hat.
Of course, 2,000 (or is it now 2,600?) varieties has its problems. Little slips of paper each a variety name on it can't all fit on a dartboard. Got a 500 gallon hat?

The One. One is all that is needed.
The One is not in tomato terms, a Great White. There is one and only one white tomato nearly universally described as having very good flavor, and it squarely takes the number 64 to find it.

Does "Cruel Jaws" (sort of a Jaws 5) not of the previous releases, count?
It can't be the same shark, as I remember, 'cause the first one drank like a fish and was really "tanked" by the end of the movie.

I love a rainbow of tomatoes. Unfortunately most of the ones I love that grew so well in Ohio did horrible here last year. But assuming your climate is similar to Ohio's, here is what we grew that did quite well for us: Estler's Mortgage Lifter (pink; I am growing this year,) KBX (orange,) Big Zebra (green with red splotches, very very sweet,) Big Rainbow (yellow/red,) German Red Strawberry (red heart,) Cherokee Purple (purple.) When I would make a big plate of slices of these it was so pretty - and very yummy.

Thanks Tormato, it feels so good to have such positive encouragement. My new shipment (ahem!) arrived today. Golly! What was I thinking! I am definitely beginning to feel the walls closing in on me. I am fairly happy with my current selected list. And I have a feeling that I might only be able to trial a wee bit lesser than I had hoped. I constantly remind myself, quality and not quantity.
I guess I can always turn to the pee tip/trick to ´revive´ any old tomato seeds. So far I reckon 95% of my collection are deemed to be 1-2 year old seeds. Only time will tell...

Been going on a wild goose chase trying to figure this White tomato out...better still a headless chook!
Looked at the 100 Heirloom Toms book - certainly not Nectarine.. the white ones that came to mind is either
Dr Carolyn or
White Queen
am I close?

64 is the number of squares on a chess board so I bet he's thinking of White Queen, but my experience with Dr. Carolyn is that it is very good. You need to grow both.

From months of observation and scouring the TV pages ^-^
And both were already on my White toms must grow list

The land shark got me thinking about a trade I did with a few others many years ago. One participant gathers their large collection together, and sends it out to another. That participants takes what they would like and adds from their collection to it. It continues to be passed to each successive participant, finally getting back to square one. Each participant should take about 4-7 days to add and subtract their choices.
Mailing could be done with perhaps a medium sized flat rate box having priority shipping, about $12.80 for the one way shipping. It would likely average about a week to 10 days between participants, barring any problems. While I have no time at the moment to start this Orca on wheels, would anyone be interested, down the road?
