The first sixteen went into the bed today. I did have to lay them down as they were so tall and wanting to form roots further up the stem having been pot bound. The winds are around 40km\hr but they die down overnight. The main thing is no more frost.

They were:
2 x Cherokee purple
2 x indigo rose cross with gardeners delight
1 x Tasmanian chocolate
1 x Berkeley tie dye
1 x Bulgarian #7
1 x marzano fire
1 x Galapagos
1 x Dr Carolyn white
1 x orange jazz
1 x Wapsipinicon peach
1 x Hawaiian pineapple
1 x green zebra
1 x menorcan slicing tomato
1 x MSITKWTK (BSCFTLPATCDWL) 2018

49F nights should be fine, even with the transplant stress. Hope you have a nice summer! :)

Found the lolly sticks rot quite quickly but at least the pen markings don't smear. Might try PVA glue on them after I have written on them. That way I might be able to save some as I am bound to want to reuse them.

More to go out this week for some friends, the smaller ones...wouldn't want to burden them with hungry pot bound demanding tomatoes crying for leg room...

And whilst i was out the front, things were happening out back...

Weigela just beginning to bud
DSCF2406.JPG
The Californian Lilac has a lovely bud , there were a couple of bees but normally there are loads - perhaps they are busy elsewhere..
DSCF2408.JPG
I was hoping to get a better shot of the peony bud, it is fascinating the ants sucking the sweet nectar - a case of a mutually rewarding partnership
DSCF2418.JPG
And the last of the magnolia, the frost got a lot of the early ones and the buds who were last to the party get to show all their glory...
DSCF2419.JPG
And finally, golden bamboo - covers a multitude of sins and sways nicely in the breeze...but it does attract wasps who like to strips the leaves..i guess for lining their nests and also I only ever plant bamboo into an oversize pot...it can take over everything in the garden, runners can pop up many feet away otherwise.

Gave the worm bins a bit of a hosing tonight. They won't drown due to the holes in the bins but is might help to release some of the worm compost tea into the soil. The worms were non plussed, I'll get them some more corn cobs to make up...

And finally, (What a long day), I have this Olive Tree in a large water butt. But I have never managed to get one single olive from it, although it does produce flowers. Does it require a second Olive Tree in order for the flower to be fertilised and produce fruit ?
IMG_20210509_203746.jpg
All i seem to get from it are these stupid useless bulbs.....

Those bulbs aren't useless because they do seem to produce some sort of light, however they do appear to be inedible. Most olive trees, but not all, are self fertile. Yours just may be one of those that needs another for a pollinator.

So I think I may have an answer to a bit of an obsession at the moment with rooting the suckers from my plants. They do appear quite vigorous and seem to flower very quickly. I think I may constrain the size of these plants and use exclusively to cross breeding.

If I keep these ones in the greenhouse hopefully it will accelerate growth and the conditions mean I can control fertilisation better.

Update to keep my growlog upto date:

yea, we have fruit.
IMG_20210514_124422.jpg
So my first cross, and perhaps my first newbie mistake. This is a cross between indigo rose and gardeners delight, now had i chosen the mother plant the other way around i might have been able to determine if the cross had actually taken. I can't be absolutely sure until the production of the F2. However, i did notice very little anthocyanin in the leaves compared to the original indigo rose.

A baby cherokee purple.

And of course, we have the legendary MSITK (shortened version)

Prepping third bed tomorrow with poles, lowering PH a bit and getting soil ready for planting in about two weeks. Another pepper was planted, think it was another menorcan pepper I brought back from holiday, and a second Lemmon chilli.

Some slow starters are still in the greenhouse and need a bit of encouragement to be ready in two weeks. Some more sucker cuttings to take and begin to rearrange greenhouse for hybridisation. I also need to work out where my onions need to go, they are ready to be transplanted. Thinking about another raised bed for other veggies, including the onions. Have I left it too late ?

I don't think it's too late for another raised bed if you get it done before the end of May. There's still plenty of stuff to sow at this time of year, even next month I'll be sowing a second crop of carrots, beetroot, turnips, kohlrabi and spring onions. In June you can also still sow beans, herbs, chard, salad greens, maybe even squash and sweetcorn. Then in August you can start sowing things for autumn/winter/spring cropping.

rossomendblot that's a good grow list, I have plenty of seed which came with my gardening magazine. I've been focussing heavily on toms, peppers and aubergine because I planted so many and had to spend so much time jiggling stuff around not much time for anything else. However, I have got some herbs and looking to do some mini herb gardens in the fabric pots inspired by SpookyShoe. With a bit more space now I can focus a bit more time on other stuff. The asparagus bed needs some work to provide supports for the ferns when they grow. Slipped some peas and beans round the edges hopefully to fix some N in that bed and I might slip in one or two sunflowers. rossomendblot how the weather in your neck of the woods ?

The third bed is now prepped and ready to go. Planted a couple of peppers in the middle section. The other late starters need to get a move on. The poles are now in, there's a lot riding on the weather over the next week, it's very damp....The stakes are high :-)

For the record, Galapagos is fruiting.

Weather has been a mix of everything, all over the place really. Today very overcast with showers, hail and a few minutes of sun. Waterbutts are full to the brim after almost running dry a few weeks ago. Tomatoes and peppers have been in the (unheated) greenhouse overnight for over a week now but I'm just waiting for some space to open up in the borders and raised beds for planting them.

Looks like it's finally starting to warm up. Tomatoes will be going outside tomorrow. How have yours faired with the recent cooler nights, winds and rain?
