Smokey the cat has taken up the practice of roosting on my shoulders and purring when I get home from work.

RIP. Koonie

Old Koonie cat crossed the Rainbow Bridge this morning. She was a ripe old 19 years old, and was from the first and only litter her mom Callie had. Callie was the one who passed away in July at age 20. Lately Koonie hadn't been eating right off and on and had dropped weight. There were some good days where she'd come out of her house and be semi sociable and other days where she'd avoid contact and eat very little. She had been that way all her life. Pickles took her to the vet this morning and it was for the best to say goodbye. RIP, old gal. As Pickles said, Koonie did it her way. She refused to come indoors, took notice of you when she felt like it and tolerated the two males all the while living the life she wanted. RIP, old gal. We buried her next to Callie.

This afternoon Pickles started dismantling the fancy digs she built for Koonie down in the back by the woods and will be cleaning out another house or two that Koonie used. The houses will be donated to a local rescue group that can always use them.

That leaves the two boys, Herman and Lester. Herman's diabetic and middle aged and Lester's just getting into his prime. They should be around for a good while unless Herman's pancreas decides to quit one day.

RIP Marianna, a beautiful, fun-loving violet budgie. She's named after the tomato Marianna's Peace, because she was getting treated roughly by her mother and thus left that home to escape "persecution." She came to live with us.( A sister came with her, who I named Faelin, after the tomato Faelin's First Snow.) Marianna had all the personality. She quickly chose a mate (there's a little free-flying flock in one room), and would crawl into my pillowcase to explore. Sometimes in the morning she'd crawl under the covers and lightly nibble my legs. When I do my daily exercises, she would cling to my shirt or nibble my fingers. When allowed in my bathroom, she would enter the medicine cabinet and toss out whatever she could manage. So sweet and funny, and a gorgeous violet color. She met with an accident and went to the Rainbow Bridge much too soon. Rest in peace, tiny sweets.

I'm so sorry Spike. The worst part of loving a dog is when we have to say goodbye.

I'm sorry for your loss. That is the hard part of having a beloved pet,
when they have to leave us.

It is so hard to lose one, Dang it, they're our furry kids and when they go they leave a hole in your heart that takes time to heal.

Smokey my cat passed on the other day.
She was really old and getting in poor health.
I just did the math and we had her for about 18 years.
I can't believe it's been that long.
Nothing I could really do about it but let nature take it's course like we all must face one day.
And make her as comfortable as I could.
Up until the last day she would always greet me when I came home.
She was laying on my wife's legs when my wife passed away here at home
I had to lift her off my wife at that time.
She would follow me to bed every night.
She would hang out with me outside.
At one time I couldn't post a picture without her photo bombing it.
In many ways she took my wife's place when my wife died.
She became my little furry companion.
She passed away last Thursday while I was at work.
I didn't figure I would see her alive again when I came home.
There she was in bed where she spent her last night with me with her little claws holding on to my fingers.
Smokey was the last remaining being left alive from my entire family.
And now she is gone and I'm actually all alone in an empty house left with nothing but memories of pets and a beloved wife loved and lost
I buried her today out back where she loved to play and catch mice.
Sometimes I honestly don't know how I keep going on with everyone in my life gone but somehow I keep doing it.
This literally is the first time in my adult life I haven't been responsible for the well being of an other living thing but myself.
Making sure others had a roof over their heads and food to eat was my soul responsibility.
I'm basically free of something I don't know how to be free of.
And that's responsibility of others.
I don't know any other life but the one I chose and committed to years ago
I don't intend to get another pet but if something comes along that needs a helping hand I'll be there to offer it.
God speed my little Smokey.
My little friend and furry companion.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Smoky and your wife will be waiting for you at the Rainbow Bridge.

I went without a pet for way too long. I finally got myself a new one after years went by. Silly me, life is so much better with some furry company.

sorry to hear worth.
having gone through it a number of times myself, i know its hard.
my current dog is eight yrs old now, and it will be a sad, sad day when her time comes.
but.... there has to be a dog in my life for my mental well being. i am just happier with
a fur ball. thats just how it is for me. can't be a cat due to wife and son being allergic to
them. i know you like critters, and they tend to like you, some thing is bound to gravitate
to you in the future. hang in there.

I love critters and they were my friends growing up.
Not much relationship with people because there weren't many around my age to play with if at all.
One time I had a veterinarian that lived next door from Africa.
He came calling my name showing me a snake on a stick.
I set my palm out in front of the shake it crawled up on my palm and coiled up looking at my neighbor licking it's tongue out at him.
Then I put my hand up by a tree branch and it crawled off.
My neighbor was flabbergasted.
It was a gopher snake about 2 feet long.
We got Smokey from the animal rescue as a half grown cat.
As all our pets my wife had me name them.
The one in my Avatar was Fang he followed us home.

@worth1, this is a really rough thing to go through. Loss sucks, basically.
Some creature(s) in need will find you, of that I have no doubt.

@worth1 I am sad to learn about your Smoky. You've mentioned her alot all these years. It's a huge loss when a pet companion passes.
My condolences.
