I don’t know if you’ve had a chance to poke around the site a bit, but there are devotees of both methods.

It depends on many things. What is your location? (you could post that in your personal information for all to see). What are your disease issues? What is your soil type and drainage? Without more information we can not answer your question.

southern calif, disease issue is nemotodes .......humid conditions

Nematodes are here too and Fusarium Wilt 3 with humid conditions and hot weather. I also went with container growing here in Texas. Those earthboxes - I'm not sure how tall they are? (Besides I don't have the money for them) But if they sit on the ground and are only 12 or so inches tall - rain splash-up is going to splash nematodes into them. If they have some kind of stand raising them up 36+ inches and then an 8 foot tall plant... I don't see how that works without a ladder?

A little salt, I agree with you that those nematodes are resourceful buggers but in this case not an issue with the Earthbox as the top is covered with a plastic cover and the bottom is sealed from the ground. Not saying it never happens but unlikely.

Coach, I like using both regular containers and EarthBoxes. You could experiment as an Earthbox is pretty much foolproof and you can grow
large, indeterminate tomatoes with a concrete wire cage.

They are expensive at nurseries, check out the online prices first and compare.
The basic model is $33 plus $10 to ship (cheaper if you buy 3). You supply potting mix and fertilizer and dolomite (They last a long time, my oldest ones are over 20 years old).

If money is no object , you can get them with the planting kit (fertilizer/dolomite) included though it’s better to at least get the potting mix yourself.
I always think the best thing is to grow with your regular containers and an Earthbox and then compare the 2 methods. You can get great results with either though.

I have used both side by side for years, usually when I want to grow a second plant of the same variety. The Earthboxes outperform the containers every time.
