Hi everyone Im new to these forums still trying to learn about gardening in general must mostly tomatoes they are my as my husband would say my white whale or nemesis depending on how they are
Im growing 50 plants this year 10 variety's only 34 made it but there are some that have grown really weird from the beginning.. anywho glad to a part of something new and fun...

Welcome AKgardener. I'm sure growing tomatoes in Alaska can be a challenge. I grow them in Missouri and it's a challenge too sometimes. Friendly folks here. We'd love to keep up with your season.

Wonder what those high latitude days in the summer where the sun almost never sets do to tomatoes? I once saw a photo of some enormous cabbage grown in Fairbanks, evidently, cabbage dig the midnight sun. Good luck with the tomatoes.

its got to be the midnight sun I grew tomatoes last year they were great my only thing was i had alot of blossoms drop. but my other veggies grew very well..

Welcome from the East coast. As you can see we have members from all over and that really makes it interesting.

No Midnight sun here but we have a good growing season and not as hot as the southern states.

No for the most part I dont miss Alaska.
I met some really nice people there and all but no I dont miss it.
I commuted back and forth from Texas like many slopers did and do and I left right as the bottom dropped out.
I met folks from the south there in the summer saying how much they liked it and they were going to sell and move there.
I told them they better come up in the winter before they did that.
It isn't something you just jump into for sure.
One teenage gal I was flying with from Houston showed up around Christmas time wearing a halter top shorts and flip flops.

Oh my god I'm going to freeze to death.

One thing I can say about growing warm weather crops there is you need to heat the water.
Plants like tomatoes dont like to be watered with ice cold water.
As for the sun up there, you can get too much of it too.
The forth of July fireworks display is a real hit with the sun still up.
