Magda!

And once again our first squash harvest is a beautiful Magda. Always the first to produce and usually still going after the others have quit. Kinda sorta like a zucchini but not as watery. I don't have to think about what to have with dinner tonight!

It does well in Ohio and Alabama so good for a large part of the country. Wonder why it's not so well-known?

This type squash has the Spanish name for pumpkin in the stores here, calabaza, very confusing. :?

EdieJ, I had trouble getting seeds, I was looking for two seasons and finally got some this spring. (Labradors yes! I got em! Will send you some but drat Canada Post delays, I expect you will have to grow them next year.)
Magda is a hybrid, but I would have tried seed saving anyway, if we had a long enough season. The last time I grew them was I think 4 years ago, and almost but not quite had a fruit ripen for seed.

Bower I got mine from Seeds'n Such last year. But I'm certain I saw it in their 2020 catalog. I might order a pack or 2 if they still have them.
ETA: They did have them in the Spring Catalog but I just checked online and they were not found so they are sold out for now. But do check with them right after the New Year and they will probably have them. I hope!!

I got them from Veseys in PEI this year. They often have them but for some (very bad!) reason, they've been offering them only as part of a "variety pack" with a bunch of other zuchs that can't possibly be as good. But they had the real deal this year... just Magda.
I have a few seeds stuck under lights which haven't shown a sprout yet... but they will.
Also got seeds for a 'Lebanese kousa' from Annapolis before I found the Magda, but they will have to be next year, I'm all out of kitchen garden room! :P

Parks Seeds carries the seeds for Magda. I have often thought of trying it but keep going back to my tried and true crook neck, patty pan and round zuc.

No they haven't yet but it is one source I didn't see mentioned. I think I saw it and/or similar squash at Johnnys this past year also. I have limited garden space AND a climate that likes to hurl cold surprises at us all season long so while I love fresh squash I rarely get much from my 3 or 4 plants. This year my squash got hailed to pieces twice and were just coming into their own and producing when sigh, glances at the fresh snow, Nature decided to hurl winter at us for a couple of days then go back to summer.

Does anyone, here, have saved seed (F2) of Magda? I'm looking to add it to my collection of breeding material.
A couple of seeds of the F1 would be a bonus, too.

In return, I have somewhere around 40 OPs and hybrids, (and who-knows-what crosses or non-crosses that I'm currently harvesting) that you could choose from.

Tormato If I had known the *#%$! Squash Bugs were going to attack just after I pulled the couple I got in mid-July, I sure as heck would have pulled seeds out before I cut them up and froze them. 😞 I hope you get the seeds you're looking for. This was the last of my packet from a couple of years ago. Darn it!

Johnny's is sold out. I found some at Veseys.com, a Canadian site. There are some at Holmes Seeds too, if you want 100+ seeds. :)
