@maxjohnson if you are pruning your pepper plants, are you going to do it in a particular fashion? I recall reading about pruning for the goal of them bushing out, but have never done it.

The last 24 hrs, 2" in the rain gauge. But right next to the gauge is my large heavy aluminum pan that I use for bottom watering whole trays. And that only had 1" in it. I don't think it leaks...vertical sided pan for the most part. I would expect the pan to have more accuracy.

This evening looks like the big stuff, there is yellow orange red coming at us that looks like it will drag across for hours. I hope it misses to SE.

It has been raining heavily, on and off all day today, with wicked wind, and around 3:30, while I was in the kitchen making some bread dough, there was a very loud thunder clap, followed by a very long rumble, that didn't want to stop! It didn't hang around here for long, probably that line they predicted coming through here (they had it must worse down south, where it came from), with the narrow line of red in the radar. Not supposed to clear out until after 8 pm sometime, with mostly green, and some yellow, but looks like the worst is through now. Still, more rain, on and off tomorrow predicted.

Wind is even worse today, I'm surprised anything is still standing. I think wind is supposed to start dying down so hopefully I can get to that raking tomorrow. No point in raking when leaves and pine straw will just blow right back.

wasn't as bad as i was expecting. no where near nine inches of snow. i spoke with
a pharmacist in marquette who said they had about a foot and a half snow so far.
still blowing to beat the band, but the weather should settle down after tomorrow, and
start warming up a bit. temps in the 30s, but the wind chill is making it colder.

76° for the high, going to 52° overnight. Dry. Maybe 1/10” inch of rain fell in last seven days. Next shot of rain possibly Sunday, although the five day forecast says we won’t get but sprinkle that won’t amount to anything.

I’d rather dry than wet.

Not really, there are some plants that want to start putting out buds, so I trim below that. It will be bushier but will take longer now to put out fruits, but the harvest is pretty good later in the season.

I thought the rain was done, today I put the dogs out on their tie outs. Sunny, warmish. Started looking gray. Started looking more gray. Dogs started looking sad...I walk out and it starting to pour again. Sorry dogs... Wet dogs stink, now I'm sad.

Jumped up to 84° right before 6pm thanks to the wind shift out of the west. Looks like 59° for the low tomorrow morning.

Finally, a rare good wrap-up to a storm.

Usually it is snow, ending with rain, and with evening approaching, I've got to be out there in the rain clearing the heavy wet snow, before everything freezes up overnight. This time it was about a day and a half of rain, ending with sleet and snow, about 2 inches of it. It ended just after noon, the sun came out and everything melted before sunset. A real back saver.

Starting on Monday, it's supposed to be a week of temps in the 60s to about 70. I'll believe it when I see it.

I finally went out today to see what damage was done by the rain and wind lately, and fortunately, not a lot really, except for the rain - just over 4", by 1 pm, but more came later (with a little more still coming in the morning) - only about a quarter inch, by 5 pm. I heard a lot of thunder later, and I see some heavy storms went south of here, but most missed me.

It's a chilly 37 this morning, heading to 66 after we've been spoiled by days of high 70's and 80's.

I came upon a piece about the "little winters" in the Smoky Mountains of Appalachia. From the Blind Pig And The Acorn blog:

"The cold wind is blowing through my mountain holler. Forecasts have the temperatures for the next few days down in the low 30s at night. Dogwood trees are just beginning to bloom in my area so the cold spell of weather can be attributed to dogwood winter."

"dogwood winter noun A frost or freezing spell in mid to late April when dogwoods are in bloom.
1952 Wilson Folk Speech NC 533. 1962 Dykeman Tall Woman 14 And after the cold spell, when dogwoods bloomed, there would be whippoorwill winter and blackberry winter. “Dogwood winter” happens in April, but it is soon followed by another spell of cold called “blackberry winter,” which occurs in May when blackberry briars put out their delicate flowers. 1970 Vincent More of Best 64 Sometimes dogwood buds burst into full bloom up here, and the very next day top coats won’t feel a bit too warm. This is what we in these parts call “Dogwood Winter”. 1982 Smokies Heritage 123 In the warmth of Spring may come a sudden chill, with even a hint of snow. This is “dogwood winter,” usually here when dogwood blossoms hang white upon the trees and wildflowers are beginning to appear. 1994-97 Montgomery Coll. (Adams, Brown, Cardwell, Shields)."

No shaking ground or buildings here.

82° and pretty breezy from the southwest, 13mph gusts to 20. Lots of sun. The ample wind and bright April sun are really sucking the moisture out of the plants. Going to have to watch everything to make sure nothing gets too dry.

Earthquake on Friday?
I felt this. The bathroom mirror/medicine cabinet shook for about 5 seconds, maybe 10. Actually,I didn't count, I was concerned trying to find the reason. It may have been 20 seconds. I thought maybe the oil burner kicked on, was that type of frequency, but it never shakes the house THAT much. Gas company was doing work out front in the morning and was conveniently finished up in time for an early lunch. I had already called my brother since he was coming down, that was at 906 (1006 for you DST folks). It was soon after that since he was on his way, and I told him about it when he got here. So 1023 EDT is right on.

I felt the bathroom shake, I thought the road crew had left, but looked out front to see if they were moving something very heavy down the road to cause the shake. They weren't, just one pickup truck guarding the intersection to keep people off the new asphalt patch. So then I thought maybe a -53 flew low overhead. We are nearly under a training route, they do nose down kick turn right over the church, which is about 800 yards away. Which always cracks me up, yeah guys, stall over one of the oldest catholic churches in America. Makes a good landmark, I'm sure. When a -53 gets close, stuff will shake. But I didn't hear one or see one, and they usually do a 180 and go right back down the opposite heading.

So yeah, shaking started, I quickly looked out front, then went out to see if there was a chopper, then went downstairs to see if the oil burner was running (no). Went back to the bathroom and all seemed normal. 30seconds? Told my brother about it when he got here, how it must have been a chopper, but didn't see it. Now I hear about the quake from someone in Newfoundland.

Later yesterday saw an H-60, looked like Army, come over pretty low. So I thought, maybe, that is the second run today, but usually -60 are coming from west of Reading on training in pairs, and this one was solo heading back toward Reading. I was outside then, and it hadn't just come over, turned around, and come back. And really -60 (blackhawk type) does not make near the vibration that a -53 does. The -53 come from Philly direction, I guess Dix or McGuire or whatever it is called now.

I wonder if that H-60 was out evaluating possible damage? Maybe checking for hi line damage, or evaluating some.

Kind of tropical here for a day or two. Wind has been ripping from the south for while. This air is direct from the Caribbean and Bay of Campeche. Dewpoint has been creeping up to where it is now at 70°. Air temperature going to 81° today, 79° Monday. Monday and Tuesday look stormy with the clashing air masses. Wednesday through next Sunday look great, high 70s, high 50s, plenty of sun.

The weather looks bad Monday and into Tuesday for eclipse chasers in Texas. Decent shot at damaging hail and strong winds throughout much of the total eclipse zone, especially just after the eclipse. Stay tuned to the weather, don’t want to be out on the highway during a bad hailstorm.

currently raining. forecast said a 30% chance of rain upgraded to a 50% chance of rain.
that means there is a 100% chance of rain happening evidently. uptick in the weather for
the rest of the week. highs will be in the high 40s to lower 50s, and more importantly, the lows
will be above freezing. more rain happening, but it won't snow. the remaining snow on the ground
will continue to melt. the ground will be thawed, so the rain will have a chance to soak in instead of
running off. we takes the weather as it comes.
got some rolling thunder now, cool.
