Today while picking pole beans I spied a recent hatching of something. I ran to get the duct tape, made a circle of it sticky side out and used that to blot up most of the little buggers. Stink bug babies. It's that time of year.

So I pulled up my stink bug sites to see which one they are and they're the southern green stinkbug. I thought I'd post the two sites here in case anyone else can use them for ID.

Green Stink bugs are what made me leery of my moms fresh garden salads.
I honesty didn't want to eat any of them any more.

Thank you for the links. For me it has been striped cucumber beetles and grasshoppers this year. I feel like I'm fighting a losing battle, but gotta keep tryin'.

It appears we have mostly Brown Marmorated Stink Bugs. Time to protect the corn since I'm seeing more than one here and there. It never ends!

Last year was the first time I ever had leaf footed bugs in my garden. This year there were several. Ms.Cowpea posted thst she sprays the adults with cooking oil spray so they can't fly. It works!

Any dish soap and water spray will break down their body armor. You can also drop them into soapy water and they drown. White vinegar and water spray is also very good. Thank God I haven't seen many in the past 2 years.

These are the ones I discovered two days ago on the big bean trellis. There were two groups of them. Baby southern green stink bugs. FORMER southern green stink bugs.



Near the babies was a bean with eggs on it. It's now in a jar by my desk so I can watch them hatch. That may not be far away as I've read the eggs turn from white to pink as they near hatching. Yesterday all the eggs were white but today only a few are.

The stink bug eggs were white on Jul 8, then turned pink by Jul 10. Today they're starting to hatch.

Hmmm, what to feed them. Since they were found on a bean and since the babies were on the beans, I guess they'll feed on the bean in the jar.

That is amazing. You should post those pics on one of the entomology ID sites. And look how many can hatch from a single stinkbug laying eggs. If you can catch them while they are all congregating
together you really make a dent in their population. For stinkbugs or leaf footed bugs , I just put my hand in a plastic bag , grab whatever they are on (usually a tomato) and then pull the plastic bag off my hand and over them. For adult leaf footed bugs I spray them directly with cooking oil spray in a can. Keeps them from flying off and you have just enough time to squish them. I suppose it would work for stinkbugs too.

Lots of leaf footed bugs caught all at once. Sprayed with cooking oil spray in can , either they drop so you can squish them or they climb up to the top of cage to try and launch off , I guess. Easy to get them then.
I only spray them directly, usually at the end of the season. Wouldn’t spray the plant as the oil is a heavy oil not one of the light summer agricultural oils.

I have a pepper plant I do not want so I am going to spray the canned aerosol oil on it as if it had a lot of aphids. It doesn’t, but I want to see if the plant can take the oil with high heat. It is just very easy to grab that can when you don’t have a lot of plants to spray. It does works great when you are targeting an individual bug. Horticultural oil has been a very effective pesticide for many decades but you have to pay attention to weight of oil- summer oil vs dormant oil. And how hot it is before you spray,

I'll be interested in your results. I'm betting it will result in a burn, but we will see!

Probably, Might be better when we grow in the fall and winter. Now it is a withering 90 and hotter.

Withering is an understatement! Drenched after 5 minutes in shade!

On July 12th the stink bug eggs hatched. Since then the babies have been just an inert cluster sitting on top of the empty egg casings. Today they're starting to move around and some are climbing the sides of the jar. The line of tiny white things along the left side of the bean are the empty egg casings.



I got one out of the jar and put it next to a ruler with millimeters showing for reference. This little one has the same markings as the batch of larger ones I duct taped off the bean plant.

I have to report that all the stink bugs in the jar have assumed room temperature and their mass casket, the jar, will be buried in the trash can forthwith. Maybe they sucked all the nutrition out of the bean that was in there. Anyway, it was an interesting experiment while it lasted.

I have NEVER seen as many Stink Bugs as I am seeing this fall. They are everywhere. They are on my trees, my house, and yesterday my mailbox was full of them and I had to shake off my mail before bringing it in.
If I spray them with Dawn will that kill them?

I know they'll die when immersed in soapy water. Ms Cowpea found that if you spray them with cooking oil spray like Pam, they can't fly, then you can squash or pick off easily. I tried it, it works fantastically well.

Yes I have been dropping them into the soapy water. I was just wondering if I put some Dawn in a sprayer and sprayed my house if that would get them. I did try it this afternoon and it does not seem to work. It does work on the Boxelder bugs though.

Gosh what a buggy fall. I have never seen them like this. Asian Lady Beetles, Boxelder Bugs and Stink Bugs too. They are everywhere. Perfect for Halloween I guess...

I'm hesitating putting out the fake spiderwebs for Halloween. They would be covered in trapped insects for sure. Well now that I'm thinking about it, it might make them even scarier. LOL
