Tomato spotted wilt virus

Hi,

Had a large number of plants get this before I realised what it was. Then I recalled large numbers of thrips on the plants early in the month, again didn't know quite how to tackle them and didn't want to spray pesticides.

Has anyone got any advice on treating what remains of the plants that have been infected or should I just pull. Any advice for next year ? Sticky traps etc.

Thank you
Sean

I have not dealt with it personally. There is some research to suggest that aspirin has antiviral properties when given to plants. You could try crushing a pill and mixing into the irrigation water.

Thanks robbie,

I tried that when I noticed some slight bronzing on some of the leaves and the odd necrotic spot. I think aspirin is supposed to mimic the plants natural response hormone when it is under attack. I also did a precautionary copper spray thinking it was early blight but as it has progressed I'm pretty sure on it being spotted wilt. Some seem to be fighting back with growth but pulled one out now as it seems to have just wilted. Probably just a matter of time with the closest ones.

Thanks
Sean

Well in the end three succumbed to an overnight wilting but the rest I have a boost of nitrogen and the plants came back and seemed to overcome the virus or at least it is being held in check for now and the plants are growing strong and fruiting.
