that is what I read on my scale ie not quite an ounce. Wry grin they look so big next to the other cherry tomatoes I have I was shocked by the lack of weight. Of course the one I picked today from another 10 inch plant is 29 grams.

Back to these this year. I have 4 seedlings from seeds of the E4 plant from 2020. My notes says this one tasted like a mild beefsteak and was a potato leaf plant. Hoping for some good things but also want to use pollen from one of these to cross to Lucinda this year for an answer to the silly question of what does a carrot leaf potato leaf plant look like. That one will not be concentrating on size but rather on producing a carrot leaf that we know for sure is also a potato leaf. Yeah this is curiosity more then new varieties but hey it will be a fun search.

an answer to the silly question of what does a carrot leaf potato leaf plant look like.
Not a silly question at all, you may invent something totally new. It sounds a little that deeply cut and broad leaves would be the opposites and cancel each other but as these are different genes, the mechanism behind could also be different and have additional impact.

You should invent a proper name for the phenotype. Porrot leaf? Cartato leaf?

Went back to these again this year. They are up to F3 now. Found a zip lock bag with two coffee filters with seeds stuck to them that were labeled and a lot of loose seeds in the bag so I have a mix of known and unknown parentage in my seeding tray.
These were planted on 9 Feb 2024 and this is the tray before I potted the seedlings up. Notice how small the seedlings are in the one pellet? Those were from a filter labeled as E4. They didn't show the first sprout until 6 March whereas the rest of the pellets sprouted by 20 Feb.

These are from after that first potting up:

My two largest seedlings Purple stick is from the F6 coffee filter, white stick is from the loose seeds.

And the whole tray of seedlings yep there are 13 at this stage...

Those seedlings are almost ready for bigger pots/cups but I really had to show this one off. It is one of the 2 moved straight into a cup when I first potted them up and has continued to grow strongly so will be potted up soon... but LOOK AT THOSE LEAVES! No mistaking them for anything but a carrot leaf.

Oh interesting. Just out of curiosity if you find out later, do Dan’s F1s terminate with only 2 flower trusses on the main stem? And do the side shoots only grow 2-3 leaves before flowering?

I really didn't look at the F2 that closely as it was not what interested me. I was looking at height, growth habit, and size/flavor of the tomatoes I got. Unfortunately I lost most of them to something before I really got to see production levels which is also important.

The F3 I am showing were planted 9 Feb 2024 so we should start to see some signs of flowers in the next month or so. Will let you know what happens

Wry grin I had a friend who was confused by my facebook post about that carrot leaf so today I did photos of each of the leaf types and hopefully cleared up her confusion.
And yall get to see those photos also
All 3 types

Potato leaf - this one happens to be rugose so that means the plant does have the dwarf genes

That certainly is an assortment of foliage types. It will be fun to see what they produce.

Time to cull this batch of 13 down to a more manageable number. At this stage all I am looking at is growth habits. Here is the whole herd
Image

These including my really fine carrot leaf didn't make the cut. I dislike rangy plants and these three could almost pass as indet seedlings. They are all at least 11 inches tall already!
Image

My next set are 7 inches tall and also includes some rangy plants that I will cull
Image

These are 6 inches tall and under
Image6 inches or less

My potato leaf is 9 inches tall and is much closer to the growth habit I want.

Notice how close those internodes are? This one is really looking nice hope it tastes good
