Which Orange Tomato Should I Grow?

I only have space for one orange tomato in my garden this year. I love the colour and flavour of Amana Orange, but our season is a bit short for it to do really well (zone 2/3), and I don't find it as productive as I'd like.

As of now, I have my choices narrowed down to these. I would appreciate your feedback and hearing about your experiences, if you've grown them. What would be your top two?

Orange Strawberry
Dad’s Sunset
Indian Moon
Zolotoe Serdtse
Kellogg’s Breakfast
Earl of Edgecombe

If there is an orange tomato that knocks your socks off that you think would do well in my growing zone, please feel free to suggest it!

Orange Strawberry knocked my socks off when I grew it in 2019.

I know everyone raves about Kellogg's Breakfast, but it only produced one tomato the year that I grew it!

This could just be me but I did not like Dad's Sunset. It was the only tomato I had that constantly had blossom end rot.

Perhaps that was the reason for the creation of kbx. I never tried Kellogg's breakfast but kbx had very good yield for me.

I like kbx a lot. I also like orange jazz. My smaller orange tomatoes are de Barao orange and ambrosia blue, an orange antho saladette.

Me too. Love KBX, I grow it every year. It's my favorite tomato for a BLT.

I have grown each of these at one time or another. In my area Kellogg's Breakfast and relative KBX are the standard by which I judge other orange/yellow tomatoes. KB is a late season as is Dad's Sunset and may not work as well for you.

Indian Moon, Orange Strawberry and Earl of Edgecomb are mid-season tomatoes. Zolotoe Serdtse is an early season but is smaller than the others. I like larger fruits so I like the mid-season varieties for your shorter growing seasons. As for flavor, Orange Strawberry would be my choice but all your listed varieties are good.

I also would never be without KBX, although I always grow it next to Kellogg's Breakfast, though the fact that I plant alphabetically might have something to do with it. Two others I'd suggest are Jaune Flammee, a smaller, zinngier one, and Orange Russian 117, a wonderful heart, beefy and very tasty.

KBX over Kellogg's Breakfast for me too.
I don't know how well it would do in your short growing season tho'.

Get some orange-tinted sunglasses, and then grow Stump Of The World. ;)

I'm hoping everyone will grow it this year, as a tribute to Remy. I just harvested my first one yesterday. It's amazing!

I'm glad to hear that you are harvesting some. I didn't get even one out of my garden.

Sorry to add another choice (you can just ignore this post  )

I grew Valencia right next to KBX this year and Valencia produced three times as much for twice as long. It's tasty, and more productive than Amana Orange, KBX, Dad's Sunset, Kellogg's Breakfast, or Earl of Edgecombe. The others on your list I haven't grown; must try Orange Strawberry!

It isn't over the top productive for me yet, but I do have 5 or 6 on the plant. Its doing pretty well. I am excited to taste them.

Kellogg’s Breakfast won a blind taste test festival 30 miles from me, so I had to try it. I grew 3 plants, and gave away seedlings to 2 other people. It was the only variety that had hollow spots inside, that blackened. The same results occurred in all 3 gardens. Everything I mentioned happened in zone 7-A, in a local radius. Kellogg's might be a great tomato. But since it was the only variety to do so. And it happened to every fruit. It is off my list.

Oh no, i hope that won't happen to me this year in Zone 6A. Maybe they prefer slightly cooler air, and a soil with more clay? 🤞

Rockoe10-- For what it is worth. I grew Pink Oxheart for several years in zone 6. I moved 206 miles away into zone 7. I can't grow them here. They get huge hollow air pockets inside. But they don't turn blackened with rot. I gave all my PO seeds away to a friend back in my old location. He grows them every year.

Have trialed most of them at one time or another. None of them are really bad, but given your preference for something productive in a relatively short season, I would grow Nebraska Wedding. As others mentioned, KBX is a better tomato, however, it takes longer to mature. Also, you don't show Jaune Flamme, but it IMO is one you might like to trial. It is a tart bright orange tomato with the beta carotene gene instead of tangerine which is in the others. It is very productive in most climates.

I grew Zolotye Serdse last season and it was meh. Orange Altai and Orange Minsk are both early-ish RLs that have wonderful flavour. Orange Altai has a kind of apricot flavour and Orange Minsk is rich-tasting, and is big with a big thick stem on the fruit where it cracks sometimes but the flesh is quite dense and the cracked spots are easily cut away. Jim Dandy is a PL that starts out slow but then really comes on with nice dense rich and sweet flesh.
