second year in a row the tomato i want most is looking bad and will probably die, (curtis cheek) all the rest of plants doing fine. can't figure it out. anyone got any idesa? bad seeds? i'm stumped! don't have to worry about it next year! no more seeds! lol lol thanks---tom

Is it an Antho variety? That would be the obvious answer. If not, perhaps they are just more sensitive to the cold. Most of my tomatoes look a bit purple because they are grown in a chilly basement - the cold keeps them nice and stocky .

I don't think it is your process--the many other seedlings prove that. I do wonder if they don't like cold compared to most other tomatoes--are the seedlings in a cool basement?

they are in basement, been growing them there for years, have a heater and fan blowing towards them for 14 hours, never goes below 58 degs, or higher than 68 degs. bottom watering them too. ---tom

have other plants with purple leaves , but none where the leaves curl upside down. lol---tom

I too am in SE Wisconsin (Pewaukee) and I have grown Curtis Cheek and it was fine started in my window years ago. The purple is a phosphorous deficiency which will correct itself once this plant goes outside. We are in for some nice temps and my plants will be going outside tomorrow. Sunshine does wonders for these plants. If I recall, this plant always looked a little droopy so don't worry too much about it. I think that it will be fine once you get it hardened off.

Editing post: I just checked and Curtis Cheek is an Oxheart which has wispy droopy foliage. So don't worry too much about those leaves.

I agree with Patti, once you get It outside, it's going to perk up.

Curtis Cheek is the one I am also most looking forward to. Last summer I gave away my extras and the one I kept was not true. Last night my tomato growing buddy told me that one of her cups I gave her died. The root system seems to have disintegrated. Fortunately I have another and think I will plant two instead of one to be sure I get at least one. Mine don’t look super strong either but other varieties look a little weak this year as well. Time will tell. Can’t wait til our cold nights are over so I can start to harden them off!

These oxhearts tend to be a weaker in the early stage and take time to get established. Same situation with Opalka. I start them two weeks earlier than my regular tomatoes. OR 117 seems to be stronger.

I am growing it again this year too. Mine is partially damaged from the snow last week, but I think it will recover.

They are quite heavy producer later in the season and keeps producing until they die from frost.

well i'm pretty much convinced that there must be something wrong with the seeds, the 2nd set of leaves dried up and fell off , getting white blotches on stems , and starting to dry up and get hard, exact same thing that happened to them last year! sprayed them down with dilluted copper, if tops keep growing good for some reason, i'll try repotting them deep, right up to the bottom leaves, maybe new root growth will come above white and drying out spots. but i doubt it. lol----tom

There are some tomato diseases transmitted through the seed, so it's possible you've got seed with a disease. This is getting out of my wheel house and experience, but I have read about it. Was your seed source commercial or trade?
