What is on the leaves?

Hello,

I bought several seedlings from Lowe's by Burpee and found later that they have some yellow spots on the leaves. I visited several Home depots and Lowe's locally and found same sports on all their plants. I made pictures of the worst cases. Does somebody know what is this, it is treatable or should I return the plants?

It looks like some severe sunburn to me. Plants that were not in the sun and then suddenly put out into the sun.

And I would return the plants, selling non-hardened off plants is unacceptable to me. That is some severe stunting.

Yeah, sun and or wind burn.

Big box stores sell plants on consignment. They only have to pay for the plants they sell, so there is no incentive for the employees to take care of them. I once mentioned to the walmart greeter that someone needed to water all of the wilting flowers by the front door, and she told me they are supposed to look that way, lol.

I agree - sunburn from putting tender plants into bright sun.

That is pathetic that they are trying to sell those plants! And I can't believe that anyone would buy them.

I saw those hundreds of tomatoes (and other "too early" plants) at HD yesterday, but at least they didn't look like that...yet.

Thank you, at least it makes me feel better that I did not bring back to my garden any disease!

That is why I go to proper local greenhouses with people who care about what they are growing. I stopped buying in big-box stores long time ago. Very poor quality. And of course best option if you have time and space is to grow yer own.

This popped up over the course of 1 day. Septoria? Doesn't really look like it...

20% of the plants at walmart are now dead due to plant abuse.
Another factor here are stores getting/putting out plants way too soon to sell.
I bought a distressed plant back in the beginning of April and stripped off all diseased leaves/branches.
Nursing back to health, but it is stunted.

Overnight?! Wow. It doesn't look like septoria, and septoria doesn't cover leaves like that in 1 night. It might be bacterial spot/speck. Is it on any fruit or only leaves/stems?

I'm not sure, but it could be Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus. It is most prevalent in the south so I have never seen it myself.

That might be Patti, like you mention, I never have had to deal with that one before.

I have moved this thread from the 'Tomato Talk' forum so that it will be able to help others with the same problem when they are looking for this information.

This is TSWV, no doubt at all . Gotten from thrips. No cure and you are going to want too get it out of your garden so more thrips don't spread it to other plants.
You even have scars on your leaves from where the thrips were eating.

You are spot-on, it would seem. Both infected plants have been yanked and disposed of. I found some thrips on several other plants. Some liquid Sevin is on tap for tomorrow, methinks...

So glad I could help, and that you can solve the problem. Seabright labs has blue sticky traps the thrips are strongly attracted to. Put them out every 5 feet and you likely won't have to spray.

My leaves just turned purple black overnight...... I've been dealing with bugs, which I thought were black aphids.

So this is a virus, you say?

My entire garden just popped up with it.

Photos of whole plant and close ups would be very helpful.
