Very Productive Paste?
Are there any out there? I have San Marzano and Amish Paste going this year, really like the fruits but production is mediocre. Anyone got a great one? Hybrids welcome, I’m not a purist.

Are you looking for determinate or indeterminate plants?

zendog Indeterminates please, for whatever reason I’ve never had luck with determinates, even the UH bred ones are epic fails for me.
mama_lor Agro looks promising, it’s been good for you?

Pony Express is my go-to for hybrid paste tomatoes. Very productive. Determinate.

Roma VF, Determinate Regular Leaf. Producers more than I could use. Taste raw isn't that great, but it's ideal for making jars of paste.

Re: Very Productive Paste?
Andiamo produces heavily well into the Texas summer. Also Rio Grande. Marzano Fire has good flavor but not as high production. Not sure what the weather is really like out there in the ocean, but if it's hot, these are good.
A seed not planted is guaranteed not to grow.

Highest temp of the summer maybe 85-90, normally low 80s and windy. Lows like 70 overnight. Thanks for the recommendations, I’ll check them out.

Re: Very Productive Paste?
Maybe try Granadero? Seed sources include Johnny's and Harris, among others. I don't have any personal experience with it, but I'm throwing it out there because you've mainly gotten suggestions for determinate varieties so far.
We mainly grow Romas as our paste tomatoes, but we grow one Pompeii plant each year. The only supplier I know of is Renee's, and they don't specify whether it is indeterminate or determinate, but I can tell you the plant is huge and keeps growing and setting fruit until frost. It's a large, long paste tomato which looks a bit like a pepper.
Have you checked out Sandhill Preservation's paste tomato selection? They list quite a few indeterminate and semi-determinate varieties. https://www.sandhillpreservation.com/paste-tomatoes

Re: Very Productive Paste?
I'll second Rio Grande and add that Divine Maltese was similar for me, but maybe even more productive and a bit better flavor.
Of the indeterminates, I'm growing San Marzano Redorta, Striped Roman and Marzano Fire, all of which are good but probably not as productive as you are looking for. I would say Striped Roman is probably the most productive of the three, followed by San Marzano Redorta with Marzano Fire being the lowest producer of the three. While it isn't the traditional paste shape, I think Coeur de Boeuf makes a very good sauce and is pretty productive.

Re: Very Productive Paste?
I like Heidi. The plant just doesn't quit. Tomatoes are not as big as say Marzano Fire but my family likes them fresh or cooked into sauce, Opalka is another great one too.

Re: Very Productive Paste?
Awesome, I’m sure with all these recommendations I can find something that will fit the bill! I may have to do a third planting for the year in October and just pray for a dry winter. Too many tomatoes not enough time.

Re: Very Productive Paste?
I didn't think of it at first, but I should have also mentioned Schokolodnaya Sosulka (I think it is also called or that translates to black icicle). It was probably the most productive indeterminate paste type I've ever grown, but it is a dark tomato, so I'm not sure if that disqualifies it for you. Quite delicious though and made a very nice sauce.
Opalka, just mentioned by HL2601 is great and pretty productive, but it has always been my worst for BER when I've grown it. If that isn't a big issue with your conditions, definitely give it a try.

Re: Very Productive Paste?
Try these:
* Pakenham Pear (probably more suitable for paste than Sausage; indeterminate, but somewhat later maturity)
* Sausage (indeterminate)
* Napoli (semi-determinate or determinate)
* Roma (regular old Roma; semi-determinate or determinate)
* Roma VF (semi-determinate or determinate)
They're all prolific above and beyond what you normally see in tomatoes. Napoli and Roma are compact. Sausage and Pakenham Pear get big plants that vine.
Edit: Added Roma VF to the list on 21 Oct 2023.

Re: Very Productive Paste?
Yes, it's very productive and quite good tasting. This and Colibri are very popular in my area, I think colibri might be even more productive but taste is not as good. Not sure seeds are available everywhere.Mark_Thompson wrote: ↑Tue Aug 17, 2021 10:27 am @mama_lor Agro looks promising, it’s been good for you?
I think Plum regal should be on your list too, it has a lot of disease resistance which could be good for your climate.

Re: Very Productive Paste?
I haven't grown it for a few years but I think Giant Garden Paste would be my recommendation.Mark_Thompson wrote: ↑Tue Aug 17, 2021 1:42 pm Must be, it’s named after you! Any indeterminates to recommend?

Re: Very Productive Paste?
Crimson Plum (sometimes called Nagina) is an inderterminate plum I'm going to try next year. Mostly because it's late blight resistant, I don't know if that's a problem for you in Hawaii.
