What's wrong with this Ping Tung?

Hello all,

Some of the fruits on my Ping Tung eggplants are yellowish instead of purple. Others are more white than purple. I think they smell a bit different. The plants are in containers and fertilized with Promix organic granular and liquid (soluble) fertilizer. Any idea why they're yellow?

Usually eggplants turn yellow when they are ripening, at least that's been my experience. If this is just happening to one plant, something is probably stressing it (maybe extreme heat), and it's going into "survival mode", when it's trying to produce seeds. The few times I've saved seeds I had to leave them on the plants a long time, before they would turn yellowish. Late in the season they start turning when smaller - maybe the cold, or less light triggers it.

It's ripe, yes. I find ripe eggplant to smell quite strange, sort of aromatic.

It's a couple of plants, and they're not stressed, at least as far as I can tell. Not all their fruits are yellow. And they're not ripe. These fruits were never purple, they started yellowing when small. And the smell is sulphur like.

Cut one and see if there are any full seeds inside. I personally don't know of any other explanation. Its like someone asking why his unripe tomatoes are red.

Yes, I grew Ping Tung this year as well and that's what mine looked like when I let them get over ripe for seed collection.
