What's on your 2022 tomato growlist?

Here's what I planted on the morning of March 18th 2022 (I planted my sweet peppers at the same time; I overseeded most of them):

* Aker's West Virginia x 1 (from Gardenboy of Tomatoville in 2016)
* Amana Orange x 25 (1 plant from timelesstomatoes.store, 24 plants from my saved seed, descended from Marsha's seed; I planted 8 plants from each of three different fruits saved in 2021 from plant B1)
* Aunt Ginny's Purple x 2 (from seed I saved last year from plant A)
* Big Cheef x 1 (from GardenBoy of TomatoJunction in January 2020)
* Brandy Boy F2 x 1 (from seed I saved in 2019 from plant A)
* Brandy Boy F11 x 1 (from seed I saved in 2019 from plant A)
* Brandywine OTV x 1 (from Tormato in 2016; marked 2015)
* Brandywine Pink x 1 (Livingston Seed Co. packet with barcode 048389049593, gifted to me by a local friend; packed for 2011; sell by 10/2011 LOT 10; wow, these are old--I didn't know until now; I like old seed, though!)
* Carolina Yellow x 1 (Thresh Seed Co. with barcode T0-SL-002, packed for 2022, sell by 12/22, LOT A)
* Cherokee Golden x 1 (from JohnnyRock of Tomatoville, January 2020)
* Cherokee Purple x 1 (from Marsha's 2016 SASE seed offer on Tomatoville)
* Cherokee Yellow x 1 (1 seed; from JohnnyRock of Tomatoville, January 2020)
* Cherokee Yellow Perfection Peach x 2 (each from a different fruit; from seeds saved in 2020 from plant A, fruits #1 and #3)
* Cherokee Yellow Red x 1 (2 seeds; from JohnnyRock of Tomatoville, January 2020)
* Cherokee Yellow Yellow Pear x 1 (from JohnnyRock of Tomatoville, January 2020)
* Frog Princess x 1 (from Julianna of TomatoJunction who got them from Remy / Sample Seed Shop)
* Gold Medal x 1 (from tradewindsfruit; packed for 2015)
* Golden Queen x 1 (from Timeless Tomatoes in 2016)
* Hamson x 1 (from hometownseeds.com, purchased in 2021 or 2022)
* Italian Heirloom x 1 (from Thresh Seed Co.; packed for 2021; sell by 12/21; LOT B; barcode T0-SL-009)
* Medovaya Kaplya cross F2 x 6 (from seed I saved in 2017; trying for a red round PL sweet cherry)
* Mountain Gold x 1 (from Timeless Tomatoes in 2016)
* Orange Banana x 6 (from Timeless Tomatoes; they might be new or from 2016; I don't know)
* Orange Caprese x 1 (from Tormato in 2016; marked 2015)
* Pinky Blast x 1 (from Tormato in 2016; marked 2015; I think he got them from AlittleSalt)
* Primrose Gage x 1 (from Tormato in 2016; marked 2015)
* Snacker-B F4 x 6 (from seeds I saved last year, from plant B)
* Super Sweet 100 F1 x 1 (Burpee seeds packed for 2013; from Tormato in 2016)
* Vorlon x 1 (from Tormato in 2016; marked 2015)
* Yellow Brandywine x 1 (I don't have a record of where I got these, but the packet and handwriting look exactly like those of Big Cheef; so, I'm guessing GardenBoy of TomatoJunction in January 2020)
* Yoder's German Yellow x 1 (from JohnnyRock of Tomatoville in January 2020)

And here's my post-transplant growlist on 4 Jun.

Hmmm, I can't say that I haven't been mulling over next year's grow list...
The only ones that are set in stone so far:

Big Beef
Stump of the World
San Antonio Rose
Rio Grande
Chef's Choice Pink (my F5 grow out)

I love that someone else is already thinking of next year's garden.

It was a dreadful growing season here this year, and I actually had to pull up and toss tomato plants. Whole varieties ended up being a write-off. Hoping for much better weather next summer!

UPDATED on April 15/22 to show what I actually ended up planting. :D

EM-Champion (DET)
Black Sea Man (DET)
Doucet's Petitbec (DET)
Dina (DET)
Early Annie (DET)
Emalia (DET)
Beauty King (DET)
Clear Pink (DET)
Japanese Black Trifele
Reinhard's Chocolate Heart
Work Release Paste
Andean
Monomakh's Hat
Indigo Pear Drop

Not too sure. Perhaps some of the better ones from previous seasons such as:
Big Beef
Carmello
Blue Ribbon
Pineapple
Hillbilly
Cherokee Purple

Maybe something new to me like:
Amana Orange
Black Krim

The rest to be determined.

Won’t be Dixie Red or Moneymaker, nothing very exciting and especially tasty, also too small, not into small tomatoes or cherries all that much.
Probably not going to do Mortgage Lifter again, I can’t really get behind that tomato on flavor. I know it’s a favorite here, but the ones I grow seem rather bland, not very sweet, no bright acidity, no big distinctive flavors, nothing stands out really for me to get behind. Could be I’m growing the wrong strain. However, the Wife likes it, though, so maybe I’ll grow one plant just for her.

I'm downsizing so plan on growing a few of this year's good ones. Haven't decided on others yet.

Purple Dog Creek
Olive Hill
Rosedale
Owen's Purple
-VolT- an F2 that survived the snow in Sept 2020 - (Vol=volunteer, T for tomato) It's a tasty brandywine, averages 12-16 oz.

I was thinking about 2022 before 2021's plants had even fruited :lol:

We can only fit 8 tomatoes in the greenhouse so I am going to have to whittle the list down from the following...

Girl Girl's Weird Thing
Red Lithium
Pruden's Purple
Rebel Yell
Azoychka
Grub's Mystery Green
Mat-Su Express
Carbon
Polaris
Daniel Burson - plant died early, deserves a second chance
Big Cheef - plant died early and I'm not sure it was true to type
Not Purple Strawberry
Sgt. Pepper's

Trying to find a really good orange, yellow or bicolour slicer/heart/beefsteak. Orange Jazz is prolific and beautiful but doesn't taste of much to me and some of the fruit has very hard, inedible veins. Northern Lights also very pretty but quite mild. I guess I'm looking for something more assertive with a good sweet/acid balance. Brandywine Yellow, Lillian's Yellow Heirloom, Aunt Gertie's Gold and Yoder's German Yellow I've seen recommended but they all seem a bit too late for my climate.

Rossomendblot how assertive were you thinking? I love Orange Strawberry and Little Lucky. If you like tomatoes on the more acidic side, I can recommend Moonglow. Too acidic for me unfortunately as it was prolific with perfect orange orbs, high in tetra-cis-lycopene. For reference, I really like Red Lithium and Pruden's Purple.

@rossomendblot , I had a fantastic Bi-Color this year. Its still experimental from my understanding and is now in the F5 generation, I believe. Its called Warren Bees Experimental BiColor, AKA Warren Bees. It tasted delicious in my mother's garden, but will need further trials for productivity and vegetative growth. circumstances were not ideal.

These are the best tasting this summer. Some had low production but superb flavor so are worth another try. Trying to cut back as 42 varieties (45 total) were too much too handle. Trying to make a maximum of 20-25 varieties and plant two of the best varieties for no more than 30. Quite the challenge so may have to cut back more to try some new varieties. Really hard to eliminate! 😁

DEFINITES:
African Queen (2?)
Basajaun
Bear Creek
Carbon
Curtis Cheek (2?)
Daniel Burson (needs a second chance)
Dana’s Dusky Rose (2?)
Dotson’s Lebanese
Dwarf Maralinga
Green Gables (2?)
Karma Apricot
KBX (2?)
Little Lucky
Marsha’s Starfighter
Midnight Sun
Perfect Storm
Polaris (2?) best tasting but few tomatoes.
Must try again.
Red Lithium Sunset (2?)
RGN 14
Rosedale
Rosella Cherry
Thorburn’s Terra Cotta (2?)
True Colors (2?)

Considering: Old ones and a few new. Can only choose 2 or 3 from this list.

Barlow Jap (new)
Chocolate Stripes (new)
Dagma’s Perfection
Dwarf Rosella Crimson
Dwarf Rosella Purple
Dwarf Tennessee Suited
Dwarf Uluru Ochre
Golden Buddha (new)
Zebra Rita

Not too assertive I guess, just something with a bit more oomph. Mild tasting tomatoes aren't really my thing but then I find Sungold a bit too intense, mostly because of the sweetness. Blush and Maglia Rosa are two more beautiful, really productive tomatoes that I found lacking in flavour. My favourite tomatoes so far are Mat-Su Express, Pink Berkeley Tie-Dye, Rosella Purple and Rose de Berne, but we've only been growing non-cherries for a few years. I have a very long list of varieties to try from my many hours of trawling through forums and seed shops :lol: Moonglow looks very interesting, thank you!

The ones that did best this year that I'd grow again were
Early Pink Wonder
Saraev Vesennie Zamorozki
Strelka
Pink Princess
Komohana Grape
Purple Boy F1

I'd like to try a few more dwarf varieties. I like the size of the plants and the neat habit. Sleeping Lady and Coastal Pride Orange were my favorites this year.

Still thinking about whether to continue growing a bunch of indeterminates. Maybe I'll spread them out more and grow 5 or 10 instead of 16-20. My old reliables, Pruden's Purple and Rose de Berne and Green Gables, were duds this year. GG died early, PP produced no fruit, and RdB produced much less than usual.

Every year is a bit different, so I will probably still plant a variety of sizes and types, but skew even more toward earlier maturity and smaller plant size.

You might like Aunt Ginny's Purple. That's just a hunch. It's a good-tasting tomato. Not too weak. Not overpowering.

If you're into green tomatoes, and have a sunny spot, Green Giant is pretty tasty (and very juicy).

Aunt Gertie's Gold, for me, was a lot like many orange tomatoes in flavor (e.g. like Orange Minsk, Sweet Ozark Orange, Dad's Sunset, Aladdin's Lamp, Valencia, etc.), except considerably more tart. However, tomatoes with that flavor aren't usually tart; so, it's pretty nice.

What do you like in a cherry? There's always SunGold F1 :)

I've tried lots of cherries, but I have plenty to go. Here are some I think you might like (don't feel compelled to grow them, of course):

* Rosella
* Garnet
* SunGarnet F1 (I've only tried the F2)
* Ambrosia Gold (Haven't tried, but people vouch for it)
* Black Cherry
* Galinas (and related tomatoes; haven't tried)
* Sprite (if you need a small plant, and don't mind the grape shape)
* Jujube (haven't tried; another grape-shaped cherry)
* Snacker- F3/F4 (they're sweet, but not super sweet; let me know if you want to send an SASE for free seeds; I really need to name those; large round yellow cherry; PL; indeterminate; heat-tolerant in dry heat)
* A lot of people seem to like Sunrise Bumble Bee (haven't tried; crunchy fruits)
* Nan really likes Post Office Spoonful, I think it's called (haven't tried)
* Chocolate Cherry (haven't tried)
* Chocolate Sprinkles F1 (haven't tried)
* Brown Berry (the taste isn't my favorite, but it is very sweet, the fruits are a good size, and it's prolific)
* SunChocola F1 (I've only tried an F2 and an F3; I really liked the F2)
* Super Sweet 100 F1 (haven't tried)
* Sweet 100 F1 (haven't tried)
* Sweet Million F1 (haven't tried)

An old neighbor has a flower bed by the road with a tomato plant he grows every year from saved seed.
Pedigree unknown,but it is a beefsteak type.He said he had a problem with germination rates this year.
He let me take cuttings to clone and I grabbed one with small tomatoes just starting to form.
If they survive til next year indoors, I will continue the tradition and maybe pass other plants around
like johnny appleseed- tomato version of the story.

Sungold Select II, has a bit more bite compared to some of the other OP Sungold lines. However, it split super easy. Half of what it produced was left for the critters, due to the splitting. Still, my bowl was filled every day, so it produces well.

Ambrosia Gold, bigger cherries with a slight elongation. Tasty and productive. Nearly zero splitting. Was voted tastier than SGS2, and collected more fruit due to less waste.

Snow White, large cherry with low acid. Hard to even tell its a tomato. It's sweet, and was voted the best cherry this year in my social circle.

Black Cherry, slow to maturity. Larger cherries, and very pretty. More traditional tomato taste. Not as productive as the Ambrosia or SGS2.

PS
The Ambrosia Gold and SGS2 grow like weeds. They grew through the herbicide drift this year, and took over my lawn. Let it grow to multiple stems and you'll have more tomatoes than one can eat.
