Eva Purple Ball vs Pale Perfect Purple

Just wondering if anyone has grown these two varieties at the same time, and which one tasted better. Also wondering if one was earlier than the other.

I have grown both (at different times) and would like to grow one next season.

They were both late for me, but not grown in the same season either.

Sorry to hear that they were both late for you Bower. Early is always best, I find as the season is short enough as it is.....

A bit off topic but grow Eva P. B. every year. As dependable as can be in production and quality. Grew Momotara for the first time. Not quite as uniform in size but close. Holds on the vine and produces and the taste is very good. I've never grown PPP.

Thanks bjbebs. Did you compare Momotaro and EPB for taste? I grew them both once and thought they tasted very similar.

Sliced Momo for fish tacos tonight. A bit sweeter than Eva but yes, very similar.
The only big difference, and it's meaningless, is that Eva is a pull off the vine fruit and Momotara gets snipped.

Not the exact comparison you were looking for, but...

I grew Eva Ste. Wendel (a cross or Eva Purple Ball and Big Beef) and Pale Perfect Purple this year. I had 2 plants of ESW and one PPP and all were grafted on DRO141TX, which I do for everything except determinate pastes and any cherry types. The grafted plants are all grown single stem, which probably favors certain types more than others.

ESW was very good, reasonably productive and medium-late season. PPP was more of a mid-season plant that ripened fruit at least a week before either ESW plant and was much more vigorous and productive. The PPP fruits were also substantially larger on average, with the larger ones being tennis ball and even a few baseball-sized. ESW is very welcome back in the garden next year, but I'll give ESW a pass. I will say that since I grow everything single stem, the more vigorous types grow taller and work better this way, so maybe ESW would do better as a multi-stemmed plant in a cage.

I've been wanting to grow them both out at the same time for a whlie, now, but I haven't grown either, yet.

I have grown both EPB and PPP., but like everyone else-not in the same year! For me PPP was way better in the heat. It was earlier and size was quite uniform -larger than a golf ball- in clusters of 3 and 4. If you are a person who loves perfect looking tomatoes, PPP fits the bill. In fact it was near Bulgarian Triumph in my garden. Both produced similar sized fruits, had great productivity, produced mid season and they are both still going now. Here is Pale Perfect Purple from The Carolyn Male Tribute seeds

bjbebs, thanks for the review! Being able to pull them off the vine is a biggie for me (who always forgets to take snips all the way down to the veggie garden!)

HL2601, thanks! I think I'm leaning towards PPP because earliness and tastiness are so important. I usually grow Bulgarian Triumph which is tasty and perfect, with the added bonus that it does well in a tomato cage, but it's time for a change!

I've yet to trial PPP.

As for EPB, I used to grow it every year, but stopped growing it when I tried my first Bulgarian Triumph.
