Any order is fine as long as the bread doesn't get soggy. This usually means no tomato or mayo touching the bread. Toasting the bread sometimes helps, but if toasting dries the bread out, then the mayo and/or tomato should touch the bread. Now I'm hungry for a sandwich.

I adore sandwiches. Our pastor hates them. He stated this in church, the audacity! This was a problem. I got clarity. He hates dry, under-dressed sandwiches. Who doesn’t?

For eating at home, I often make open face sandwiches, all the same ingredients, but less one piece of bread. Fewer carbs and you don't feel like you are eating mostly bread. Does take a little care in balancing things when you take a bite, but at least everything doesn't migrate and squish out of the other end as you start biting into it.

So, one slice bread, may be toasted or not, generous Mayo, sliced tomatoes, sliced onions, bacon or choice of meat, lettuce leaves. If I have no lettuce, very thinly sliced cucumbers from the garden, work well for the final topping.

Sandwiches are mostly a summertime thing with me. That's when I mostly make "wraps". Hardly any bread and carbs.

Fall, beginning with turkey sandwiches, and into winter, not too many sandwiches then, but out comes the real bread.

Bread
Cooked deli chicken
Bread

Or

Bread
Peanut butter
Bread

Orrrrr

Wrap
Hummus
Olives
Avocado
Lettuce
Cucumber
Tomato
Sprouts if I have them - alfalfa

Or
Butter toasted bread with cheese in the middle, melted

That and turkey burgers and chicken shawarmas basically is every sandwich I ever eat. Don't like condiments, so it is pretty tame.

I'm amazed at the amount of people I run across that have never heard of a Reuben Sandwich.
Nor have they heard of pastrami or corned beef.

Never ruin a good sandwich by allowing onions anywhere near; unless like my father-in-law used to eat onion sandwiches: two slices of white bread with lots of butter on both breads and a whole onion sliced thick.

Had one guy years ago that had a wife that did nothing but sit around the house.
She couldn't even drive.
She made the most horrible sandwiches for him.
He saw mine and flipped out.
My wife made it.
Had everything on it like meat tomato lettuce pickles and onions.
His wife really didn't give a hoot about him and only put a slice or two of meat on his sandwich.
He went home and told her what my wife made for me.
He got his sandwich the next day but with less meat.

Some people aren’t cut out for marriage.

I’m trying to remember what all goes on a club sandwich. Ham, turkey, cheese, but what kind, bacon is on them, right? Lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise. What’s the fricking order on the layers! How much of each!? A club sandwich is something I order out, it’s too much stress to try to make myself.

There are different ways to layer the same sandwich depending on your preference. There's even debate among purists about which ingredient should hit the tongue first but there are tricks for eliminating sogginess etc. This is a pretty good article and guide:

That site reminds me of my favorite breads for making sandwiches, a challah and a babka. They are not the easiest to work with. It's usually only once or twice a year that I'll buy a loaf. With a babka, at Easter, ham and kielbasa are the combined meats.

umm can we just leave the mayo off but barbeque should have sauce I do not understand this "dry" barbeque" some speak of. I am one of those stick whatever between two slices of what passes for bread to help hold it together and eat it. Grilled cheese on the other hand are not sandwiches they are something you try to make carefully. Just the right temp to toast your buttered bread while melting the cheese inside. Sadly DH simply slaps them on the grill and makes either black or untoasted and unmelted cheese things...
