I've had this hanging basket of yellow petunias for about a month now, and today I discovered a red bloom. I wonder what is going on genetically here?

Did you know petunias are in the same family as tomatoes, peppers, tomatillos, ground cherries, wonderberries, eggplant, goji berries, and potatoes? :)

That's cool about the red flower. I'm not sure the reason, unless it's a different plant.

Nice flowers. :)

Did you follow it back to the base of the plant? Is it from one branch, and the rest of the branches from the same stem are yellow? Or could it be a separate late runt that just now got big enough to set blossoms? It's hard to tell exactly how many plants are in the pot.

Nothing to see here. The red flower turned out to be from a separate single stemmed plant that must have come from a rogue seed somewhere.

A bee checked out this pot of purple petunias, but ultimately decided he could do better elsewhere.

And a hanging basket of pale yellow... all of my petunias come from nursery starts. I know that many folks on Tomato Junction like to start from seed.

Looks like you got a weird one from those yellows after all! A chimera, how fun!
