Queen butterfly

I have heard of these, but I have never seen one before today. This is not a Monarch, but a Queen butterfly.

Very interesting! I'd never heard of them either. Google tells me they don't range this far north, so thanks for the pictures!

I saw this caterpillar this morning on the milkweed and was sure it was a malformed monarch caterpillar because it had three sets of "tentacles," not the usual two. I googled it and found out that it was a queen butterfly caterpillar.. The caterpillars for the two species are nearly identical.
