This showed up tonight on one tomato plant. I've never seen this before so I went looking at photos of various diseases. It looks black on the leaves, possibly bacterial spot as it likes temps 80+, which we have. Since the tomatoes grow in buckets, they only get watered at the base. We have had no rain in about a week and a half. The lower limbs have been pruned off so that nothing touches the soil.

Does anybody recognize this? My initial thought is to go get some copper spray tomorrow. Geez, this is way too early in the season for crud to be showing up!

It doesn't look good. If it is on the stems, too, I would guess spot also.

So far the stems are clean. All of the infected foliage (not a lot) has been cut off. I didn't get to the feed and seed yesterday so will have to get some copper spray Monday just in case whatever it is isn't just environmental and reappears.

Better shots of this tomato funk. Anyone recognize it?

It reminds me of manganese toxicity, but I don't know what it is. Is your soil acidic?

Check the plants closely on the undersides for mites.

Can I also ask in this same thread for my case?
It looks just the same. I also thought it could be some fungus or bacteria. So maybe treatment with copper?
Please, what do the rest of you say?



ps: strange thing is that this infection is present in several leaves of the plant (not whole plant) and all the infected leaves are in the top layer and not the lowest leaves would be more reasonable to be infected from soil.
Is this contagious for the rest of the plants?
Currently the weather is very hot and dry. Almost heat wave levels..

I think that the both of you have mites. They will feed on the new growth at the tops of your plants for the most part. If they get really bad then they can cover your whole plant. They are easy to control with insecticidal soap.

It might be the Torradovirus, which can look similar.

Here is another picture of the leaves I cut and placed on ground for taking a picture of front and back side of the infection, before I burry them in soil. I don't believe it's a virus. Only this plant developed the infection and it comes from my own saved seed. What I did was removing all the infected leaves and spraying with fungicide (for fungus and bacterial infections) only the infected plant. I chose not to spray the nearby plants, but I will monitor the things to see how they go. Thank you for the answers.

@swordy , after removal of the affected foliage I had that looks like yours, I sprayed with copper and so far it hasn't come back. Keeping fingers crossed.

Unfortunately, I just read your comment and having in mind the condition of the plant which doesn't improve and after reading the symptoms of TSWV, I can say that there's a big chance of the plant actually has this virus! It's been 2 weeks or more since I first spoted the infection. I wonder if insects have already transmitted the virus to neighbor healthy plants. It's indeed hard to take out a grown plant, especially one that has many tomatoes, but I can't risk it. I will take it out tomorrow. Thank you for your comment!
