I was made aware of this awesome project that is developing new strains of vegetables focusing on the upper Midwest. It is also being run by professors and students at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Its stated goal is to develop plants that are well adapted for the area with a focus on organic farming. Small backyard gardeners can participate or at least benefit from their research and findings.
The website is huge. It contains information on ongoing projects and the results of past projects. It also contains tons of reviews on tomatoes and many, many other vegetables. A big goal is to provide commercially viable veggies that taste good too. That alone is enough to make me a fan. If their strains are available commercially, you can find a link to vendors. It looks like you can also get seed strains the team is working on if you promise to report your results. I think. I have only begun to explore the website's offerings.
