So here it is the peak of my tomato season and my wife and I came down with Covid last week. Now all my great tasting heirlooms are tasting like styrofoam. I could get depressed if this goes on much longer !

Oh no..! Hope it will be be short-lived, and that your taste buds will recover. I know people it happened to... it can take time, but eventually goes back to normal.

This couldn't happen at a worse time for me

I have 9 varieties that usually rate a NINE out of TEN for TASTE and now this happens.

Well I know personally of two suicides and a divorce on the way from the vaccines changing some mental states...so be glad it is just your tastebuds.

Yak54, I hope you feel better soon and get those taste buds back in time to enjoy the rest of your harvest! I don't know your vaccination status and I hope you feel better regardless.

@Yak54 I'm so sorry that the timing of this was so bad for you. Can you try to freeze or dry a few for future tasting? I do hope that you both recover soon so that you can enjoy these beauties. 9 of your all-time favorites and you not being able to taste them is pure torcher.

That sucks. Covid took away my smell and taste in June and I was dreading not being able to taste tomatoes. The first couple of weeks were the worst then it gradually got better. I am completely back to normal now but can't remember exactly how long it took because I stopped thinking about it.

Not had Covid since this virus appeared on the scene, that I know of anyway, or if I did have it, it didn’t effect my sense of taste or smell. Maybe I’ll never get Covid, no doubt I’ve been exposed to it many times by now.
I’ve never been one of these super tasters anyway. But, even with “normal” taste buds and an average sense of smell, it would pretty bad not to be able to taste food, including tomatoes.

Chances are your sense of taste and smell will come back in no time (anecdotally from people I know within a few days).

Yeah, timing is everything !

Last week we canned 17 qts. And I was enjoying them for 3 wks.eating 2-3 a day before covid. Hopefully I'll get my taste back in a few weeks and I can enjoy them for a few weeks in Sept. & Oct.

Yes my wife and I are starting to feel better but still have the cough and my taste buds are not back to normal yet.

So I think my taste is starting to come back now that it's been almost 2 wks. since I started feeling sick with covid. I ate a SOTW tomato this afternoon and it tasted pretty good. Things are looking up and hopefully my taste buds will continue to improve over the next week.
