Summer Hawaii 2023

So have a lot going on this year. Kinda six separate little projects:
  • Some grafting trials, using Maxifort and a local weed that is well adapted to the area (S torvum) as my rootstocks.

-Planning to grow a plot of cherries to sell on the local food hub. Will prune to two leaders, lower and lean.

-A plot of slicers, theme is no reds or pinks. Will grow all these one stem, lower and lean.

-Two breeding projects, one from @Bower, and one my Red Antho cherry x red wild S pimp.

-A handful of giants for the contest, thank you @MissS for hooking it up with the exotic seeds! Growing 1.5 stems, tied to T-posts.

-Growing a handful of wild species, looking for Septoria resistance, with the goal of crossing them to some of my favorite domestic varieties.

All this is under the cloud of maybe having to deal with Bacterial Spot, so pretty much crossing my fingers, doing some animal sacrifices, praying to Jesus, Allah, Jehovah, Buddha, and David Koresh hoping that it’s a dry summer and it turns out to be a non-issue.

I mostly use the grow log to be able to look back and see what I did at a later date, but if anyone is reading and wants me to elaborate or make new threads for anything just let me know.

Really nice handful of cool projects @Mark_Thompson . :)

Ugh, way too busy. Thinking if I neglect the yard, my kids, and don’t go to work so often, then I’ll have some time for my tomatoes though.

Had a kid come by with a drone and snap a few pics for me. Fun to see everything from a different perspective.

1, 2, and 3 will be my tomato plots. 4 is where I will grow all my other summer veggies. It’s currently tarped letting my cover crop break down. 5 is my winter tomatoes growing under the eaves.

Sorry these thumbnails are turned, but if you click on them they open right side up.

I recently made a little shade cloth section, so far so good for lettuce and for starting seeds.

My winter tomatoes under the eaves are still doing alright, putting out some big fruits as well as some pretty cherries (my own F1).

My other mid-winter project was planting some “Wildling Panamorous Mix” tomatoes. They grew in some really challenging wet conditions and are holding up to disease pressure really well. Haven’t tried a fruit yet but I’m impressed. That’s the messy tomato forest photo. Going to put a cattle panel over the top and let them continue to sprawl.

My big summer seed planted is about a week from being ready to pot up.

Some of the babies are getting big.

Did some grafting. Two of the pictures are of a volunteer from my garden grafted onto S. torvum, seems to be doing fine, but the rootstock was from bought seed, not local seed from our crazy invasive. We just killed a fifteen foot plant at my dad’s house and I got a bunch of seeds from that one for future use.

Got drip installed for two of my three plots, they had 18” spacing in stock, so I guess that’s what I’m planting at. I was thinking 24” but oh well.

Also finally got some fruits on the countertop. Hopefully it will look like that for the next 6 months. It offends my OCD sensibilities, but it is for a good cause.

Very cool you are growing the Wilding Panamorous, and a perfect place to do it. Hope something special comes from it! :)

Plants are all potted up, inching closer to plant out date. Wildling Pana’s providing some eaters in the meantime, along with the potted Big Zac. Been getting a little more rain than I’d like but hopefully as we get deeper into summer we get some drought.

You’ve brought an idea to mind, for creative and aesthetically pleasing ways to store and display fresh tomato fruits on the counter. I’d like to say they’re like family and can feel free to sit anywhere, but truth is they are a little more like welcome but unruly visitors. It can be a relieving sometimes when the visit is over.

Great looking garden. It should be a bumper crop. I need to look up Clayton. Family name.

@MarkAndre My chubby little two year old got up on the counter the other day and ate two fruits like apples, nothing left not even the stem stub. :D That’s what they are there for. Plus now I can cancel the paternity test, she’s mine for sure!

Yesterday I culled eight plants that had some foliar disease, got a full box of unripe fruit off of them. Seedlings were looking healthy, so started working on the bamboo overhead.

Then today I finished the bamboo, finished the irrigation, and got my first plants in. A couple Amish Paste, Malachite Box, Orange Accordion, Speckled Roman, Juliet, Green Zebra, Matt’s Hornet. Off we go, summer 2023 begins!

Very nice! Bamboo is extremely useful in a garden. I like your structure.
