I have Lynnwood on my grow list for this year. Of course I can't predict if I will get seeds from it or not but hopefully I will. Otherwise I can send in a few seeds from my package.

@Tormato wouldnt it make your life easier to have some sort of shared google sheet with whats in the MMMM stock, whats in low or out of stock, and people can add what they are sending in and what they want for next round? So you are not having to scroll through 250 pages of posts?

Obviously dont fix whats not broken but I cant imagine how you keep track.

I wasn't sure where to post a question, but it's re seed saving for next year, so "responding to wish lists' seemed appropriate.

My question: How many seeds of the Johannisbeertomate should I try to save and send in? It's apparently a yellow current variety that is new to the swap. It has been my first tomato to ripen, and I have at least 200 seeds already fermented and drying. Those are from about 5 fruits, and there are hundreds of fruits ripening as I type. I could happily go hog wild, and save enough seed to supply the entire USA (remember my Black Cherry seed submission?). So, how many (in some approximation) would be helpful but not excessive?

I'd say about 500 to 700, minimum.

That would be just enough to distribute to about 100 people (likely over the course of a couple of years). 100 is a nice round figure for getting a "new" tomato out there.

It's up to you whether you send in a bulk baggie, or (where the real work comes in) filling individual baggies (a number decided by you) with 5+ seeds each. Most people send in 10 to 20 individual packs of a variety, with or without a bulk pack. I am looking for more "Nifty Fifty" donations, to make things easier.

At a minimum, a label should have "Johannisbeertomate 2023" (or '23) on it. Handwriting labels for that variety sounds like a lot of fun.

Anything written below that, like "yellow currant", or your forum handle, is fine, but not necessary. I'd like a good description of varieties on participants "send in" list, and in the Spoiler Alert thread if one is going to post there. A new Spoiler Alert thread will likely be started near the end of August.

I haven't seen an actual definition anywhere, but I'm assuming a "Nifty Fifty" is fifty packages of one variety. Is that right?

There's likely a definition somewhere, but I'm not going to go looking for it.

You're correct that it is 50 packs of one variety.

But, that variety is not to be mentioned anywhere. It's to be a mystery included in packages. Also, I require that such a variety must get my OK via PM. I wouldn't want anyone making up 50 packs, only to have that variety already widely distributed through the swap. The best NF varieties are great tasting tomatoes virtually unknown to growers. Several participants will PM me a short list of varieties for me to choose from, and for them to then save lots of seeds of that variety.

Peppers can also be NF varieties.

And, if someone can't come up with 50 packs, 2 varieties of 25 packs each works fine.

You know all about "best laid plans," right? Humans make plans, God (or destiny/karma) laughs. So, we'll see how it goes.
