[*] no@Cornelius_Gotchberg, how adaptable to metric is the Mrs Gotch. Does she have access to metric scales or would it be best if I convert to imperial.

I have worked out the recipe based on 1kg of Bell pepper and/or Chilli or 500 ml vinegar which is the size that speciality vinegars here normally come in then there is the big batch, 3.9 kg of peppers.

Don't forget the garlic, a full batch has 60 cloves in it, but I know you grow plenty :D

Those photos will come in handy come spring as I had not listed the order of planting in the beds and neighbours cattle went walkies tonight. The bed with the new to me garlic was worst affected of course with marker stakes and variety tags disturbed. As we say, Not Happy Jan!! Still have a few small cloves of most varieties that we going to be eaten, but they will go in ground now.

The cattle can sure do a massive amount of damage in just a short time. I hope the damage was not too severe and that the neighbor finds a way to keep them in their pens.

And that brings to my mind that since garlic as many alliums are sensitive to the length of the day, we should split to separate threads for different latitude ranges. Whwoz lives almost as much south as Gotch is north, so length of the day is similar (just on opposite times of the year). Climate and temperature during winter is naturally different due to proximity to an ocean and that affects on the varieties, which can be grown.

I reside on same latitude north as tip of Antarctic Peninsula is south, but I doubt garlic could be grown there...

Spanish Early Violet looks a lot like Early Purple, which supposed to be Glazed Purple Stripe. Those Glazed Purple Stripes have cloves same way that they look almost separated and the clove tips can be seen through the skin. Separating those is much easier than with Porcelains, which have the cloves so close to the scape that some tool would be needed for prying the cloves.

Looks good @Whwoz! How many different varieties are you going to plant?
India grows a lot of garlic in regions like Maharashtra which is 20° north latitude or Rajasthan at 25°, Eygpt is another big producer at 30° north. Garlic is successfully grown in Sumatra on the equator. Peru also grow garlic a few degrees south of the equator.

My softneck Lorz Italian made what I consider to be nice heads here at 29° north latitude. Even hardneck Spanish Roja that I thoroughly neglected and stuck in the worst part, in heavy clay and a rather shady area of my garden, made a few reasonable multiclove heads.

Is garlic really all that sensitive to day length or temperature?

Damage not yo bad @MissS, just that the worst of it happened right where I had planted the new to me varieties, knocking over sticks I use to mark between each variety and tags for each variety.

Added one more garlic from self grown stock, giving Iris one more chance to grow a decent sized clove

A couple of softneck Artichokes made the cut, these make massive cloves, globes are oblong and only have half a dozen cloves, the biggest is about the size of my thumb

Creoles are some of the hotter garlics, although this year for some reason our Vulcanite and Dynamite that both rate 4.8 / 5 on the heat scale were very washed out, more like 3.5. Wondering if it was the rain? Still some more of these to plant. These Creoles new to me are all supposed to be a bit milder in heat, but still strongly flavoured

Some of you may remember that I had an elephant garlic bulbil shoot by chance last season, well it grew and made a round and a small bulbil of its own. It has been planted where I can keep track of it, separate from other Elephant garlic
Elephant garleek.jpg
hopefully the cattle missed it.

A quick straighten up of tags today after the cattle saw that only two were completely out and mixed up, Shandong and Gossimer, there will be some squashed cloves but not that bad overall.

Had three more Porcelain Garlics turn up today, Northern White, Korean Bukhan and Northern Exalt. Straight into the ground with them, 3 of the Northern Exalt in the grow on bed and 4 of each of the others, the remaining cloves, along with some French Ruskie, Susan Delafield and Music cloves went into a mixed up bed, each clove individually tagged, for an attempt at getting true garlic seed.

Our porcelains only seem to produce 4 to 6 cloves. Very interested to see some with 8!
