Hello fellow Tomatojuctinians (?) I'm José from Paraguay, I started gardening about a year ago and fell in love to tomatoes thanks mostly to the work of Craig Lehoullier .. I'm really hoping to grow my very first beefstakes tomatoes this year! Great to be here :)

I'm currently growing my first Cherokee Purple (can't wait to try those!), White Cherry (ok flavor, not crazy about it), Indigo Rose Cherry, Mexico Midget, Rosella Purple, Wild Fred and Eagle Smiley.. I'm planning to grow more DTP dwarfs this spring..

I don't really know specific varieties of my country, according to one local publication these exists:

"Saladettes: Floradade, T 70, T26, Zuní, Duke, All Star, Empire, Ivan, BHN 330, Milenium, Aclain, Colossus.

Paste tomatoes: Santa Cruz Kada, Santa Clara, Jumbo, Siglo XXI, Príncipe Gigante, Jumbo, Combat, Cosmic, Katana.

Cherry: Pepe, Pico, Putti, Coco, Tomini, Saladino, Sweet Treats"

But the only ones I always saw where the red, common , ones.. my dream it's to have a rainbow of beautiful and tasty tomatoes some day :)

Welcome to TJ.

Looking at ASUNCION climate data, winter there, so basically now, looks almost better temperature wise for tomato growing than your summer. Or maybe tomato growing is possible most or all of the year? March through November looks about perfect weatherwise. Only does the summer there look a bit troublesome for tomatoes with tropical looking temperatures. Based on your latitude, frost must almost nonexistent in most places?

Thank you all for your warm welcome!

@karstopography you're absolutely right, last summer I only grew cherry tomatoes, but now I'm trying bigger ones, I will send some pictures later.. we have no frost here, meaning 32 degress Farenheit or less, you're for South California, do you have frosr there?

Actually, I’m from Texas, not far from Houston/Galveston area along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, about 29° North latitude. Most winters we do have frost, normally only a brief period and not too far below freezing. Tomatoes normally get transplanted into the gardens around March 1st. Some also grow tomatoes in the autumn. Summers present difficult conditions for tomatoes to thrive with the tropical heat and humidity. Small fruited, cherry types do better in summer.

Gardening can be a year around activity here. Cool season brassicas and other cool season crops do well November through early Spring. Warm season crops do well in the Spring and Fall. Hot weather crops work in late spring through early autumn.

greetings from da U.P.

that would be michigans upper peninsula where the residents are called yoopers,
and the people of the lower peninsula are trolls because they live below the
macinac bridge. this past winter we had snow on the ground eight months in a row
from october to the first week of may. i blame it on global warming.

my prediction is that you will soon be in possession of tomato seeds that are going
to produce a rainbow of colors. big uns, little uns, and in between.

Bienvenido a nuestro foro! I'm sure we would all like to learn more about South American tomato varieties. So far, I've only grown one...Peron, from Argentina, and found it a good producer and noted very little disease. Are there any varieties you can recommend?
