My experience with Dester is very much the same as MissS. I've grown it for the last 7 years and it has been a good producer of great tasting tomatoes with few problems. In 2021 my Dester plant produced 81 tomatoes and 2022 my plant produced 55 tomatoes and 2023 it was 53 tomatoes. So for me it's one of my all time favorites and a "Grow every year" variety.

Dester is a wonderful pink beefsteak. I liked it very much and it's remained on my grow again list since 2012. Very well balanced. A good producer. I used it for fresh eating, salads, salsa, sandwiches and sauce. It worked well in all cases.
That is good to hear! Does it have strong flavor as claimed? That's what drew me to it.

I got, factoring in the take from predators, closer to 30 tomatoes. But, my garden is somewhat more shaded than ideal and the humid hot nights of some time starting in late May or June pretty much shut down fruit setting. Hence, the get them early strategy I follow.

I’m working on the trees, chipping away at the worst offenders. However, large Tree removal isn’t exactly free or a DIY project if you value life and limb. Two or three more trees, one to the west and one on the east side should make huge strides into a more beneficial lighting situation.

You play the hand you are dealt with. Most large heirlooms produce about 10 to 15 pounds of tomatoes for me, not counting percentages lost to critters. Dester produced, tomatoes that came inside un damaged by vermin, 7051 grams of tomatoes, or 15.54 pounds.

It doesn’t mean I have dialed in my fertility or soil or spacing or pruning or anything. I’m 100% sure I make mistakes and missteps that ultimately lower the productivity.

Yeah 2021 was a great year for my Dester. It out produced all my other varieties by a wide margin. For reference my Polish and my Volovie Uhko produced only 42 tomatoes each.

It does have a strong tomato flavor. I usually prefer a more assertive flavor over a mild.

The links won't work. What size of growbags and did you use any extra fertilize?

15 gal grow bags as you can see in the pic. The plants are fed daily with nutrient mix and when it gets really hot twice daily like at the end of July and most of August. :D

Those are obviously well cared for plants. I’ve never even thought about a daily feeding. Bravo on coming up with that, it obviously works wonders.

I learned this from AKmark who is well known on the other forum. He taught me all I know about this method of growing. He has several green houses in Alaska and his methods and success is legendary.
