It's because the wind was carrying the sound waves with it.
Soooo if you were traveling into a wind going the same speed as the speed of sound would your land speed be at zero but still break the sound barrier?

Planes hit heavy head winds going to Alaska.
Makes flight late.
Usually they make up for it heading back south.
One airline I dumped years ago started saving money and wouldn't put the hammer down to make up lost time making me late for my connecting flight in Phoenix.
Hint hint.
That and a couple of other things made me dump them and fly Alaska airlines.
