sure signs of spring in the copper country
yep spring is right around the corner
coyotes are entering breeding season, and start showing an interest in the chicken yard.
i chased one off yesterday. also saw a couple skunks going back and forth. i leave them alone.
they leave me alone, and they pose no threat to the chickens.
the roosters start getting stinky with each other. i have four. bubba, and the sons of bubba.
roosters have about a two year reign before they get deposed bubba got dethroned last year by
one of his boys. the rooster hatched last year will test his mettle, but will lose.
days are sunnier. still snow on the garden, too soon to see what might be growing.
side roads are getting soft, and pot holed. slow down when driving or you will be sorry.
seed starting is imminent. yeah.

I've read/heard that skunks will kill chickens, if given the chance.

skunks have never been an issue with da birds. maybe a timing thing. skunks are nocturnal.
when they are out, the birds are in. the main four threats here are coyotes, fox, raccoons, and hawks.
when i was on my fishing trip last year, my wife saw a black critter in the field carrying away calico jack,
one of the roosters. that was the same time mama bear, and her two cubs were checking the place out for
a free meal. my neighbor said a black wolf has been in the area. wolf or bear, i dunno.
lots of things here like chicken.

Re: sure signs of spring in the copper country
sandhill cranes are back as are some swans that hang out at swedetown pond.
just started hearing spring peepers. seen a few ducks, but not any canadian geese
yet. worms on the driveway after a rain. a spaghetti pile of garter snakes coming out
from their hole near the driveway and propane tank. somewhere between six and ten
of them. hard to count. its either heads or tails. snakes need to be careful because
the chickens like worms, and snakes are like big worms to them.
its getting nicer.
