Seems like every year for the past 3-4 years I have some weird volunteers coming up in my garden. The past few years I've had 3-4 Korean melon growing in my peach and pomegranate beds. A few years ago as well as this year I have watermelon vines growing on the side of my garden. I've had tomato seedlings come up in some areas of my yard that are inaccessible to my chickens. I'm not aware of any other gardeners in my neighborhood so I have no idea where these seeds came from. Some bird must have eaten some melon seeds in some other neighborhood then flown over and pooped them out in my yard somewhere.

Anyone else have this happen?

Not watermelon, but lots of evidence birds brought seeds here. Not counting the many kinds of berries, I've also found peach pits and empty heartnut shells, which didn't come from my compost, so without a doubt birds brought them here.
Birds are very savvy about planting their own habitat. They can be very deliberate about planting the seed they wanted.

I'm guessing mice would, too. The mice we've had here love muskmelon/cantaloupe/honeydew seeds. They like watermelon seeds, too, but not as much. If mice get in the house and find melon seeds, they tend to leave trails of them throughout the house. That's one way I could tell if we had a mouse.

You would have to grow them inside a laundry basket here.
