That is so cool! I've heard a few stories like this and it never fails to awe me.

I'm getting some Fremont Culture bean seeds for my mom for Christmas. They have a similar story of being dug up in a cliff dwelling that was about 800 years old and sprouted by a local farmer. It's so incredible that these seeds can remain viable for such lengths of time.

I read the article and found that despite all the fanciful speculation, no one can still do a positive ID on the tree, even now that it's fully grown. My guess is the stray seed was from one of those nameless nuisance weedy tree/shrubs that no one wants around. If it was something considered valuable medically or for perfume, you'd think that a version would have continued to be propagated later into more modern times. But congrats to them for getting the seed to germinate.

It sure is a trashy looking thing.
