For @Tormato and any others who look forward to these onions, I just got my Vidalia heads up in the e-mail this morning. It's for pre-ordering which I don't do but also tells when the crop is expected to be ready:

"We expect shipping to begin between April 15th - May 6th, but please note - that date could slightly alter, as we adjust the season start based on crop maturity."

Is that about normal for the timing on shipping?

Yeah, I think that's about right. However before then we'll be getting in "green onions", the ones that look like big scallions with egg-sized onions on the end. I think they might be culls from the onion fields for spacing purposes. I'll have to check that.

I get the same message about the estimated shipping dates. The shipping dates often align with the first green onions poking up in my garden.

And, as I mentioned in the past, there seems to be a large grower of "super sweet onions", just outside of the legally-labeling Vidalia zone, that ships about 2 weeks earlier. One super market had a hand written sign calling them Vidalias. They took down the sign when I pointed out they could possibly get sued, if I decide to report them.

As for the "green onions", have you ever tried them? There's nothing like that for Vidalias, here. I'm wondering if the tops are sweeter or milder, like most true green onions/scallions, than a typical onion top (which are usually fairly strong flavored).

No, I haven't but that's probably the sure fire way to tell! I will buy some when they start showing up in stores and report back.
