His best roles were (IMO) Avery Tolar (The Firm) and William "Little Bill" Daggett in The Unforgiven

I enjoyed almost all of his films I can't actually think of one I didn't.
The Package was good along with many others.
Mississippi Burning.
Crimson Tide.
The Domino Principal.
A bridge too far.
Countless movies for sure.

A sad story. I wonder what the cause of death is. At least they all left together.

I'm thinking carbon monoxide or suicide.

I didn't realize he was 95. At that age, lots of possible degenerative physical problems that can't be fixed, so maybe he wanted to go out on his own terms. I hope his wife didn't feel coerced. I hope law enforcement reveals details, so we don't have all this useless speculation.

Carbon monoxide has been mentioned by his daughter, but we never know if we can trust the source these days.
So sad!

His wife was only 63 so carbon monoxide is the best outcome

UPDATE: “Elizabeth Jean Hackman told TMZ that while [police] are not sure of the couple’s cause of death, they think it could be due to inhaling toxic fumes. The Oscar-winner, 95, and his wife Betsy Arakawa, 64, were found dead in their Santa Fe home on Wednesday. While police at first said there were no signs of foul play, a bombshell search affidavit raises several unanswered questions. Now, cops are pushing for a full investigation….The actor was found by two maintenance workers laying dead in the mud room off his kitchen on Wednesday…. While it seems he died of a sudden fall, his wife was found in the bathroom surrounded by pills. The dog was found in a closet in the bathroom.”

Sounds like something out of a Sherlock Holmes mystery or something Stephen King would dream up.
She died from the hantavirus he didn't have anyone to take care of him so Gene Hackman died and the dog starved to death.
What a nightmare.
That must have been a terrible load in his wife.
A very good friend of mine has a mother with Alzheimer's right now.
His grandmother died from it so he's very familiar with the symptoms.
