I am in my early 70;s and only plant heirloom except for for few big beef for emergencies. usually have around 50 plants in the ground and replant in July with a sunshade over the tomatoes as in Mississippi in july and August they will burn up . have had good luck with the dsun shade and tomoatoes till frost.

Hello and welcome to the Junction @bulldog. It sounds like you have lots of tomato growing experience to share. I can't wait to hear about your garden. I only grow heirlooms and open pollinated varieties.

Helloooooooooo from one dawg to another ("SEC! SEC!") from east central Jawja and welcome to the Junction.

I'd be interested in seeing how you set up your tomato shade as I have the same summer heat problem here.

Early 60s here on the Texas Coast says howdy. 12 heirloom/open pollinated tomato plants currently out in my little plot. Plan is to carry these plants as far into the summer as they want to go. Last year, Hurricane Beryl ended that plan in early July. Hopefully, we won’t get another July Hurricane. The weather is out of our hands.

Good luck with your season.

Welcome from the west coast of Canada 20 minutes from the US border. I am fairly new on this forum as my old one ceased to be and I find TJ to be a friendly ,knowledgeable , good international gang, I am very impressed actually and very happy to be here. I think you will be too..

I also grow Big Beef+ as my only hybrid tomato but am older than you and having had to downsize I am stuck for space ,but still have enough dirt to play in. I think I have about 20 growing this year.

Welcome. Glad to see you neighbor! Hopefully I can learn much from you. I don't use any shade cloth, but I've usually had about as much as I want by August anyhow. The only heirloom I'm trying this year is Green Giant, which is new to me. Have had great luck with Arkansas Traveler and Cherokee Purple in the past, but wanted to try Big Beef plus, Brandy Master, Red Snapper, and SunGold, which are also new to me. Just 8 plants and all experimental.
