When it rains, it pours

Not the weather, just life.

I was getting ready to slowly set up my 4-pole teepees for growing pole beans. But, overnight, someone stole my ladder. I wasn't too keen on climbing the ladder this year, anyway. So it will be setting up single upright poles, that just need to be set deeper into the soil.

On the plus side, I finally started some tomato seeds, yesterday.

Maybe, the ladder just got "borrowed" and you get it back ? Hopefully? We are late with the tomatoes and beans and ...this year, too. But, they'll grow and all will hopefully bear the appropriate fruits, and will feed us with some extras as well. May not be a great year for us, but will strive for a good year that is not a tire ...or maybe as much as tires cost, well, you get the idea, Ha!

That's horrible.
The rural water department Aqua Water stole my shovel over 20 years ago.
I'm still ticked.

My tomatoes (my second attempt) are just sprouting now. I will be behind this year but I do have some great new ones to share if they all sprout.

I'm so very sorry to hear about your missing ladder. They do seem to have a way of running away around here too.

Doubtful. Stealing metals, for copper, aluminum, brass/bronze (graveyard markers, etc...), even iron manhole covers is big time around here. I once heard two guys looking at an empty 3- story church Rectory building in town. One asked the other, "I wonder how much copper water pipe is in there?" :(

These days you need a video camera on your property to see who is there trying to steal something. At least you have a picture of the thief. Who knows you may even know them. It’s a sad world when someone comes into your yard and steals your ladder ! :x

Yes, sadly true about buildings getting stripped of usable materials by thieves. And stuff not put away or locked down seem to "walk off" more and more.

Thank goodness, the half barrel planters ( so far) are too heavy for the sort of bad people to steal from the yard. I don't leave watering cans or tools out though, they might go for a stroll too easily. Ladders are getting pretty expensive anymore.

Glad to hear you are able to plant some things. Hope with the warmer weather you are able to kick the illness that has had you down. I hate thieves, disgusting to steal something someone had to work hard to get.

I’m thankful we live in the country. If someone comes out here and does such things they are likely going to lose their life all for a ladder. Neighbors and ourselves watch out for each other and I’m often home alone. Wouldn’t know if they are there for a ladder or present to try and hurt someone. Scary times.

Sorry to hear about the theft ... but it's not too late for a crop of fall tomatoes!

Amen! It's kind of dangerous for people who want to rip off those of us out here in the country. ;)

Here in Wisconsin we're not legally allowed to use deadly force to protect property, only if there's a reasonable belief that imminent loss of life or severe physical harm. Neither my ladder nor Miss Yin would fall into the legal self-defense category. Sad but true.

Good on you to get those tomatoes going though! And shorter bean towers can work in a pinch. All of those I saw at Heritage Hill were shorter, no need for a ladder towers. Out into the garden with you! At least if you die, you'll die happy.

I absolutely understand and sympathize. I don’t think someone should lose their life over a ladder. That being said, out here with no street lights and a long wait for emergency services they would likely meet their maker.

Well, that's it for tomato starts, this year. I left the tiny seedlings out on a 90+ degree day, and they all bit the dust. I'll have all of two SunGold plants this year.

All of the empty space is slowly being filled in with quick growing things, like radishes, summer squash, cukes and early varieties of bush beans, carrots, corn, etc...

@Tormato I'm so very sorry to hear that. I lost my first set of seedlings and my second set is just getting their first true leaves. I am so afraid of something else going wrong, so I go out and check them 5 times a day. Geez, a worried old lady over some plants.

Volunteers?

With volunteers, one needs to have tomatoes drop on the ground, rather than be eaten. That just doesn't happen, here.
