Oh, that's breathtaking! You must spend half your day watering.

A lot of those flowers are winter flowers... pansies, dianthus, snapdragon, and calendula. Because the temperatures were cool and the sun was not intense I didn't have to water that much and it did rain. As the temperatures heat up and the winter flowers die back I'll have to replace them with more heat tolerant varieties. I'm going to do a grow bag of zinnias. And yes during the summer months I'll have to water a great deal. It all depends on how much water falls from the sky. The area I live in gets 55 inches of rain per year.

If you like alyssum, but you find that the plant declines as your temperatures heat up, there is one called Snow Princess that is supposed to do well in heat. Very fragrant and bees love it.

I worked this afternoon trying to beautify a large spot of bare soil right outside the back door of the house. This area can be difficult because it doesn't get very much sun. I chose some plants that in my climate actually do better better in partial shade. I planted 2 Skyscraper Orange salvias, 1 Mystic Spires blue salvia, and 1 Blue Porterweed. The plants will attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Things will look a lot better once they start growing together.

Other plants in that area are elephant ears, Mexican Bird of Paradise, and some cannas that are just starting to come back. And I stuck a pot of Torenia in there just for the heck of it. And there are 3 pots of plumeria beginning to leaf out.

This area should look lovely in a month or so. Will you add mulch?

Yes, it will look a lot better with some mulch to dress it up.
