At the farm greenhouse, dill is a volunteer every year, and it makes a great companion for tomatoes.
I haven't succeeded with companions in containers.

I used to include garlic chives ...but just prefer regular chives as the most sustainable culture

If lemon balm volunteer gets in the container module ...I remove it as it is just to invasive …
I also do include nasturtiums in some .
I grow buckets of Basil from seeds ….then transplant. But some of the best Basil is ...volunteers.
I get Gobs of marigolds seeds from previous years harvest .
English Thyme is a good one here also. Lemon thyme as well.

I grow in containers for the most part. I plant onions (for green onions), marigolds, lemon thyme, small zinnias, violas, and petunias amongst my other veggies.
Basil gets so big once it gets hot and would over take my tomatoes so they get their own planter/pot. :)

I'd have to go with pizza and spaghetti. ;) j/k

Seriously, though, I usually don't plant stuff with them. Just other tomatoes. But I like having the watermelons next to them. I'm not recommending that for others, though, but I personally like it.

Most of the tomatoes I like to grow the most smother almost everything but muskmelons, in my experience (but watermelon can grow under tomatoes without being stifled). Not sure how squash behave by them.

For large containers, dill, cilantro and parsley. For raised beds, lettuce.

No tomato companions here except for other tomatoes. My tomato plants are in ground with about 3 feet between them for good airflow and the soil is covered with a straw mulch to keep down any soil splashing.

I like basil and squash. The squash I allow to vine towards the tomato and then as the squash plant matures it shades the soil around the tomatoes without taking away any nutrients or blocking any light. Basil does fine here in the shadow of a tomato plant.

Instead of doing a watermelon patch next to a tomato patch, this year, I'm seriously considering checkering them. I mean, a tomato in one spot, a watermelon next to it, a tomato in the next, a watermelon in the next, etc. I have a feeling my watermelons might get bigger that way, and my tomatoes might not be as prone to getting stifled by other tomatoes (watermelons lie lower and the serrated leaves and thin stems let a fair amount of sun through anyway). Plus, the watermelons will probably have fewer spider mite problems. (When they're not in a big patch of watermelons, or when they grow into other plants, they tend to have fewer spider mite problems.)

Anyway, I intend to tell you how it goes if I do it, this year. I don't have enough watermelons planted to do it next to all the tomatoes. So, it would only be maybe a fifth to an eighth of the tomatoes growing like that.

Our Early Girl F1 tomato plant (uncaged) was surrounded by watermelons last year and didn't seem bothered by them. The watermelons just grew around or through it.

Lettuce and bacon and toasted white bread...and mayo.

Don't do companion plants. I don't want any competition for my tomatoes. I do have cucumbers, a jalapeno and green (pole) beans in separate patches.

Tried planting French marigolds among my tomatoes last year. Something ate all their leaves within a week.

I plant a row of tall sunflowers on the west side of my tomatoes to give them some shade in the afternoon.
