Shaping up to be a good year

I only have 5 forming so far. That might be it for me. I love that pineapples don't mind crowding.

Yup, my plastic mulch paper is from the pineapple company that went belly up 15 years ago, so it is marked with where to plant. I figure if it worked for them it should work for me.

Works quite well for you, you're going to have quite a bounty. How many plants do you think you have?

Guessing 200+ plants, maybe 2/3 have fruit.

We originally started with about 60 crowns from a restaurant down the road, then when those fruited we took the crowns and slips to make the big 200 plant patch.

The land we built on used to be pineapple land 30 or 40 years ago, the downside is there is a ton of rusty farm equipment that we keep shoving around the property until we can come up with a few grand to have it hauled.

Cant sell it for scrap metal and get paid to get rid of it?

Quick follow up, first ripe one picked today and it’s a beast.

Just the other day I was explaining how pineapples grew.
These guys had no idea.
I could have told them that they hung from a tree many feet in the air and they would have believed it.

Lucky you! We grow them here, but they only get to about 3 lb size. That's a beauty!
Do you use any fertilizer? If so, what is your regimen?

Most of mine will be around 3-5 lbs, this one is not normal. I think I put a bag of nutririch pellets in the dirt before we planted, but that’s it. No fertilizer, no bug issues, no disease issues, man I wish tomatoes were this easy.

I never have bug or disease issues with my pineapple plants , and I sure can't say that about tomatoes either. I am going to Google nutririch.

Wonderful bed of pineapples. How close are the markings on that pineapple paper mulch? We have them scattered around the yard but I think they could use some organic fertilizer and a bit of compost around them as we have very poor soil. I was just given some tops — think I will try and do better by these. Thanks for the inspiration.

Sorry it took me a few days, pineapples are 11” apart. The rows are set up so two rows are 16” apart, then there’s a 22” gap for the harvesters to walk through, then another pair of rows at 16”. Sorry if that’s confusing, I can draw a picture tomorrow if you like.

No picture necessary. I get it. But thank you anyway. I won’t have rows as I have free form garden beds to put them in. Usually we have them jammed in someplace but I see from your mulch paper that they can grow pretty close. The ones forming pineapples now look kind of puny probably because they need some fertilizer. They are spaced pretty far apart. We have others in a container that have no space whatsoever so that can’t be good.

So I found this article and after reading it I am curios. You say you started with crowns and slips so do you just cut off the top and plant it? Thanks Mike

Always twist the crowns off the fruit, never cut. Then we pull off the bottom leaves until we have about 4” that can go into the ground.

We got our first crowns from the restaurant down the road. Then once those fruited we were able to harvest slips and suckers, and grow our patch.

Thanks Worth, but the ones at our store are tasteless. I have read online about many amazing varieties, but never any place to get them.

They are tasteless because they are picked green.
And they won't ripen any more once harvested.
Just like a watermelon.
There are ones better than others.
You used to be able to order some really sweet white pineapples picked at the peak of ripeness and air freighted to you door in 24 hours.
I think about a hundred bucks for 4.
Way too much for me.
