Did I miss any variety? Wax, greasy or something else?

That's a great list, @Rajun ! Possible adds:

"Cowpeas and other Vignas" would be a large group that includes adzuki and mung beans, as well as the yard longs (really cool!)
and
"Other Legumes" might be an interesting catch-all for anything else such as lablab and winged beans.

Cowpeas are definitely a great suggestion, in my opinion! They can be pretty popular in their own right on other forums.

Oh, a peanut forum would be pretty nice under here.

I think there are too many categories under beans. Example, pole beans are also snap, shelling or dry. Limas could be bush or pole. Bush could be snap or dry. The list reminded me of all the categories at Houzz. I think beans, peas, unusual varieties, maybe add peanuts would be enough. Just a suggestion, I do like all the other boards. This one just seemed confusing with overlapping categories. I do grow many beans. love shelling out dry mixed beans.

I would have some confusion as to where some beans would be placed, such as Marango, which is yellow but wide as any italian bean. Would it be a wax bean or an italian bean, or a snap bean?

I am easy to confuse at times, I just grow them and eat them mostly, LOL!!

I agree about the bush and pole bean thing (for simplicity's sake), but I think cowpeas probably could benefit from having their own forum.

I think it should be a work in progress, not ready to be set in stone.

One bean that I think you missed is sword bean. But, I would not list it, yet.

Well, I'm not sure what everyone will want (whether it's just a single Bean forum, a moderate system, or a more complex system is fine with me, although my vote would go for a simple or moderate system on this site), but understanding the whole structure of edible bean relations might help us figure it out! I researched it some months ago, and this is what I came up with. Am I missing anything? Note: I used a code block to get the indentations to show up.

Code: Select all

Arachis -> Peanut
Cajanus -> Pigeon Pea
Canavalia -> Jack Bean, Sword Bean
Cicer -> Chickpea
Cyamopsis -> Guar
Glycine -> Soybean
Lablab -> Hyacinth Bean
Lathyrus -> Indian Pea, Tuberous Pea
Lens -> Lentil
Lupinus -> Lupini Bean, Tarwi
Macrotyloma -> Horse Gram
Mucuna -> Velvet Bean
Phaseolus ->
    Common Bean ->
        Common Bush Bean
        Common Pole Bean
    Lima Bean ->
        Lima Bush Bean
        Lima Pole Bean
    Phaseolus polyanthus
    Runner Bean
    Tepary Bean
Pisum -> Pea -> Garden Pea, Snap Pea, Snow Pea
Psophocarpus -> Winged Bean
Vicia -> Fava Bean
Vigna ->
    Adzuki Bean
    Bambara Bean
    Cowpea ->
        Asparagus Bean (AKA Yardlong Bean)
        Black-eyed Pea
    Moth Bean
    Mung Bean
    Ricebean
    Urad Bean
The list above excludes legumes that aren't beans, though! I'm not really sure that anything in the legume family isn't considered a bean, but we also have things like carob, mesquite, fenugreek, licorice, trigonella, tamarind, jicama, astragalus, american groundnut, and ahipa. Some would argue whether peanuts, peas, probably lentils, and maybe other things are beans.

I agree that it's way too many categories. I don't see a big list of categories under other veggies, for example peppers which also have many types. I like growing dry beans but I don't even see a category to post in for that, some are bush type and some are pole type.

In the legume section Italian and runner beans are listed in the same category.
In my worthless humble opinion they are two different types of beans.
I think the Italian beans need to be omitted all together.
They can have their own thread in the pole bean or bush section depending on which Italian bean it is.

It seems like the majority thinks there's too many topics in the bean category so here's what was posted as suggestions. Can I get some feedback to make the changes?

beans
peas
unusual varieties
maybe add peanuts

Beans
Peas
Cowpeas/Southern peas
Other Legumes

Common Beans
Cowpeas / Southern Peas
Garden Peas
Lima Beans
Peanuts
Other type Beans

We also have to add Edamame/Soy/Soya somewhere too.

I pretty much like this suggestion, except call it just Beans not Common Beans, maybe?

And have sub whatevers under the main headers so the boards do not get cluttered?
