Any fail to germinate?

Hi folks, of those that got my seeds, did anyone have germination failures? I would like to germ. test any that failed, to make sure The seeds are good, or not give them out to anyone. I don't need a whole germination report or anything(unless you want to) but I would sure like to know what didn't work.

Too early to tell for me, but so far, Tundra, Green Gables, Amana Orange, Karma Pink and Rosella have sprouted (in about that order). Still waiting on Polaris, Margaret Curtain, and Taiga, but they have lots of time to go.

Only tom so far, Uluru Ochre - 8 likely - has germinated one. I might try some more later; doing my paprikas now.

As for peppers, Apple Pimento, Grenada Season, Scotch Bonnet, Shattah quite vigorous with few non-germs. In fact, I had to stop and scrape the rest of the seeds into junk pots. Slow Fatalii is proceeding well. Jay's Peach, Mako Ako, no germs but they're notoriously slow. The others haven't been wet long enough to judge.

None of these seeds were yours, of course, but I had a report ready in my brain.

Haha, thank you for the report!

Sounds like we are off to a good start. Thanks for the report.

Mine are up and growing.
I had very good germination rates under lights with no heat mat.
Those I planted are: Wild Thyme Bi-color, Karma Pink, Karma Purple, Taiga, Mocha Splash, Marsha's Starfighter Beefsteak,
Green Gables, Curtis Cheek, Rebel Alliance, Tundra, Karma Miracle, Karma Apricot, and Rosella Cherry.
Average germ time for me was 5 days.

All of my 22 tomato varieties had at least one germinate, and the same with my 6 eggplant varieties. Too early to say for peppers - only 2 of 19, so far, but that's normal. I planted some chinense early, but nothing yet - I should have planted them even earlier!

I transferred my tomatoes off of the heat mat, since all have germinated, and I don't want them to be growing too fast! That happened last year, but it was so warm out that the plants went out earlier than ever before.

I planted 4 each of Sweet Aperitif, Dr Caro Pink, Cherokee Chocolate, Big Rainbow, Galina's, Dixie Golden Giant, Chocolate Cherry, Bumblebee Mix. It's been 3 weeks and here's what has happened:
Sweet Aperitif, Dr Caro Pink - none have sprouted 😢
Cherokee Chocolate - 2 up
Big Rainbow - one just starting to poke through
Galina's - one up
Dixie Golden Giant - 3 up
Chocolate Cherry - 2 up
Bumblebee Mix - 1 up

I am most upset about Sweet Aperitif as that is my granddaughter's favorite.

No failures, but Big Cheef all came in weird, one was normal, a couple kinda deformed, like stuck in their seed coats and kinda twisted. The last one came up normal and just died. I have one good one that I'll try not to kill before I get it in the ground 🤣.

No germination issues with Aker’s West Virginia, Dester, or the Indian Stripes.
I killed Dester but that’s on me. :?

So how about some who received my seeds chiming in too? Would love to hear if there were any germination problems.

Thanks Dawn. I hope it survives, you only need one. Big Cheef is incredible.
A hint would be to put the seeds just a tiny bit deeper in the seed starting mix, the seed coats stay moist longer , so stays softer, if still covered by some soil as they form the cotyledon leaves.

No problems at all here. Those would be Brad's Atomic Grape, GGWT, KBX, Rebel Yell and Rosella; all good to go!

Good to know, thank you,I hope you get some. I'll test the seeds, chances are if all else were successful, these might be bad seeds.

Marsha, this is as of day 8 after seeding, so some may yet emerge. I think these are all the ones I got from you:

Elgin Pink 3/5
Heart of Ashgabat 2/4
Marsha's Starfighter B. 4/4
Mocha Splash 4/4
Nizami 3/4
Red Lithium 2/4
Tundra 3/4
KARMA apricot 3/4
KARMA peach 3/4
KARMA miracle 0/4 -- only one that failed to germinate so far.

I have not yet checked this morning to see if any more popped up overnight. Will let you know if KARMA Miracle makes a late appearance. I should put some more in paper towels to germinate. Surest way to make the soil sown ones come at once.

After 5 weeks, Rosella is the only no-show of your seeds, of about 40 tomato varieties total.
KARMA Apricot and KARMA Miracle took 3 weeks!! to germinate. They were even later than some tomato seeds I tried from 2010-2012, as well as later than any of my eggplants, and I had begun to lose hope, but now both are 100%.
Mocha Splash was the speediest of all my varieties. I didn't start charting germination until day 5, but it was well ahead of the pack.
Of the rest, 2/3 seeds germinated from Taiga, Tundra, and Red Lithium, and 100% from all the others.

Great info. They sure did take their time! I'm glad they finally showed. I'll test Rosella, I know someone else who got it to germinate in about 2.5 weeks in upstate New York, no heat . Do you use a heat mat?
Rosella's close sibling Garnet definitely takes longer than most to Germinate.

My Rosella sprouted by 8 Apr 2020 (my first tomatoes to sprout sprouted on the 6th of April, possibly the 5th, but I didn't check that day). They were (and are) in cells in trays in a 6'x5'x3' unheated Strong Camel greenhouse. I seeded them on 27 Mar 2020, or so, in a mixture of worm castings and dark peat moss (not a lot of the peat moss), with wood ash and monoammonium phosphate added to the top of the soil at seeding time, before watering. (They fare quite a bit better that way compared to the unammended worm casting / peat moss mix, in my experience.) I had the Rosella seeds (and most of the rest of my tomato seeds) in the freezer for some days before planting.

Note that I did take them in the house overnight (before they sprouted) for three nights, due to the temperatures being down to 26 and 25° F. those nights.

Good! I know others have gotten Rosella to germinate too. So I won't need to test them. Great report Shule, thank you.
