Growing up in the sticks most people was poor. There was two groups of us. Those that knew they was poor. They often had mental issues later in life. Because they was poor. They knew they had hand-me-down clothes, and a outside toilet. They was miserable most of the time. Then there was those of us that was just to dumb to know our condition. We was actually happy, with our surroundings. Sure we wanted indoor water. So we didn't have to tote it from the spring. But a toilet inside ?? --that was kinda much. We was to busy having fun to notice our poorness. We seemed to fair better in later life. We had fewer scars to heal. Nothing was ever thrown away that was served on the table. After the flour came through the cabinet sifter. Which caught all the bugs, and worms, out of the flour. { you do remember that sifter screen ? } A huge batch of biscuits was baked. More than could be eaten. After breakfast a few onions was laid out on the table. And we would slice a onion, about 3/8 a inch thick. Lay that onion between a sliced open biscuit, and salt it once. But that means you are just half way there. So you salt it again. Stick that onion biscuit in ya pocket, for later eats. Boy was it good ! Those of us that saw ourselves as being privileged, because some kids had nothing in their pockets. We did a little better than most. Some 30 years ago a group of managers from the company I worked for was sent to NYC for a convention. They was served one of those high class dinners. Where each table has its own waiter. No meals was under 100 bucks. They brought them out finger appetizers. A piece of a sandwich consisting of a Vidalia onion, and peanut butter. I tried that later, when I heard about it. I was so glad I declined to go on that trip. I'd had to go back there and show um high class chefs what the hell they was doing. 

I was in Anaheim California with some guys.
The traffic was congested so I drove across a park.
The guys were flabbergasted.
Looked like a big hay field to me.
I was from the hills and didn't know any better.

@Worth1---- The first 9 years of marriage, we never went on a vacation. I was just trying to keep my head above the water. I finally got a job that paid good. Other employees was used to making good money. They all talked about where they was going to on vacation. Finally I got pinned down by a group of them. They had to know where I was going on vacation. Not wanting to be embarrassed, I said-- "I got some work to do around the house. Then we are going to run down to the beach for a week." I had heard others say that before. The beach was 400 miles away, and we had never spent a night there on vacation. A booking agency found us a room, because of a late conciliation.
So me, and my wife, was siting in a Jacuzzi, with a free drink that had a umbrella it. Something else, we had never had before. The water was nice and warm. Palm trees blowing in the wind. Our son playing beside us in his kiddie pool. We was there about 30 minutes, talking about how nice it was. Then a guy came by and said. It must have timed out, I'll turn it on for ya !. He rotated the dial. And we got to see how a Jacuzzi really worked. We thought we was in the adult kiddie pool. LOL

Tom, we never went on vacation either. never went as child. We took our children once to Fla when we stayed at a relatives empty house. that had to be the saddest unenjoyable week we ever spent going somewhere with our children. we went to a themepark somewhere and I said " umm, I am not hungry today. I fed the children but couldn't bring myself to buy food for me.. we spent our money on making the house payment and paying our bills as they came in. there wasn't extra enough to do more. I stayed at home and raised my family.

I remember eating shredded raw carrots with sugar, and raw egg yolk beaten with sugar as treats when I was a kid. And coarse rye bread spread with bacon grease, salted and peppered. I wouldn't mind a piece of that bread now. We weren't all that poor living in the city, but my folks came from a farming background and made use of what they knew.

I was one of the dumb poor. Almost everything other folks had, we didn't have. When I was in the seventh grade, I got in a fight and the other kid kicked me in the groin. I finished the fight and had surgery the next day to repair the damage in my groin. When I healed and went back to school, I found the kid (he was the school yard bully) and grabbed him by the front of his shirt ready to punch him down. I felt something stick me sharply in the finger. I looked down and saw that every button hole of his shirt was closed with a safety pin. One had opened and stuck my finger. I thought "this kid is poorer than me cause my mama sews buttons on my shirts". I let him go and turned and walked away without punching him. I've never had an onion biscuit, but I used to onion sandwiches with mayo. Every summer I have tomato and peanut butter sandwiches. Looking forward to some this summer.

One year, I attended a fancy dinner with everyone dressed in expensive suits and dresses. It was a charity dinner which raised thousands of dollars each year for a children's charity. Every year, expensive steaks and other expensive foods were served. Everyone was looking forward to the steaks. The waiters brought a bowl of pinto beans and set one in front of each guest. People didn't know what to think until the organizer explained that we raise a lot of money each year and then spend a lot of money on the ball room, waiters; and steaks. By eating beans instead of steak, more money can go to the kids. He was right and the beans were delicious.

My daughter and I were dirt poor for most of her life. I have never taken her on a vacation but I did splurge and take her to the amusement park twice. I about died when they sold water for $4 a bottle. I too went without my meals that day.
When she was 12 someone gave her a box of CrackerJacks. She had never had one because I didn't spend money on that kind of stuff. The people looked amazed that she had never had it before. She opened it and they told her that there was a surprise in every box. She found the prize and says "really?" and threw it away.

I remember my first Big Mac.
It was in Palm Springs California.
I was with guys that had eaten at MacDonald's many times.
Me never, I had only seen these giant burgers on TV commercials.
So I order the Big Mac and get this wee thing.
What is this, I ordered a Big Mac?
That is the Big Mac.
This thing looks like crap.

I also remember my first Big Mac. I looked at that tiny little burger and thought "ahh, the wonders of marketing". I guess they could sell a freezer at the north pole by calling it a heater. I've probably only eaten one or two more big mac's in my life. An old adage states "fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me".

I went to the grocery store today for the first time in a few weeks. I needed some distilled water for our coffee maker. I bought a few groceries also. I spent fifty two dollars on groceries that would have cost twenty five bucks three or four weeks ago. I thought they put some anti price gouging rules in place for the virus scare. I also bought a can of those flaky biscuits where you break the paper can and stick them in the oven. Yes, I do cook my own biscuits usually, but we are getting low on flour and the stores haven't had any for a couple of weeks. I thought I will fix myself an onion biscuit on flaky biscuits. I paid ten bucks for a five buck bag of dry pinto beans, so we won't starve.

I have never eaten an onion biscuit. I don't really like biscuits, but I'll eat one if it's served to me.

I have eaten a Big Mac back in 1987. I was doing two jobs at once - I was a mason and was also trying to help my uncle's used car business during lunchtime on the brick job. I was young and pushed myself way too hard all the time. Anyway, I repossessed a car that was in walking distance of the brick job. On the way to his car lot was a McDonald's. I learned that you can't go through life without eventually projectile vomiting McDonald's food while driving in heavy traffic - I still won't eat there.

You need to report the place yes prices go up and down due to supply and demand but that is price gouging from some place it may not be the store it could be their supplier.

@Donnyboy---- sad to say its your location. Here in Hawkins County TN, I've seen no price changes whatsoever. Only on Beef products in the meat section. And I've seen those prices spike in the past, for no known reason. But never this high. Stores has bent over backwards to help people out. Many things has a limit, or a manager's note requesting people not to over buy. One store had a note at the egg shelves, "One cartoon per customer, please think about your neighbor's kids ?" The lumber hardware store had huge pallets of toilet papers, and paper towels, at the door. But the same old prices. I'm pretty proud of this old backward location. They have faced this with unity.

Yep! I have no idea why prices in the two little, small town grocery stores I shop at have increased so much. I'm pretty sure it's linked to the virus. It could be the fact that they want the extra profit and it could also be true that they have to pay for the extra help they hired to keep the shelves stocked and the carts clean. I don't know. I do know one of the stores is the only store in town and it is now too small for the town which is growing rapidly. I understand it will be closing when the virus scare is over. I'm hoping it is replaced with a big, new HEB store. Still a lot of empty shelves in the little stores. I don't see many people buying fresh veggies and they are beginning to look a little tired just sitting there watching the shoppers heading to the canned goods and frozen goods isles. I understand farmers are plowing their crops under instead of harvesting them. I still see shortages of eggs, 2% milk and any milk in 1/2 gallon size, gallon sized bottled water, baking goods, spreadable butter (plenty of stick butter), Lots of limits on many products remain. I haven't looked, but I understand everyone now has plenty of toilet paper available.

We had a little foster daughter for a couple of years. She was only seven years old and had been horribly mistreated. She loved McDonalds happy meals and the little toys that came with them. She also loved the play area. We would take her to mickey d's for the happy meals and the play area. We would then go somewhere else for my wife and me to eat.

The breakfast stuff ain't half bad.

I like the coffee.

After our wedding reception DH & I were tired and had a long drive home. We stopped at a McDonald's in our tux & gown for coffee. Surprised them all- they offered us anything on the menu for free (we just had the coffee). Made their night.

My mother used to by those refrigerated biscuits that came in a can and she would open the can by hitting it against the edge of the kitchen countertop. The can would explode, thereby releasing the biscuits.

I have never eaten an onion biscuit, but biscuits and honey are good.
