My Favorite Rose

This is 'Perfume Delight'. It's the only rose I own as they're too much trouble in general but this one was given to me because it's my favorite. This bloom is about 4.5" wide and is a tad past prime but still smells heavenly. I think it is probably the rosiest smelling rose I've ever sniffed! So few of the modern day hybrids have a decent scent to them any more.

I remember those days when I had a backyard full of roses. Very hard to manage with FL climate and finding a good root stock. You are right. Perfume Delight, Peace and Don Juan are the 3 roses that did best for me. Glad to see this post.

I grew dozens of David Austin roses in Mass. and they were fantastic. I’m trying a few down here ... jury out still.
Love them though.

Does this rose look familiar to anyone? I know it's a long shot, but I was hoping somebody could identify this. I've had it for about 20 years, it's a shrub, it has very small dark green leaves and the flowers are very perfumed.
When I purchased it I remember being told it was an old or antique rose.

It isn't a Knockout. It is an "old fashion" or "antique" rose. The leaves are much smaller than those of an Knockout rose and the bush blooms periodically throughout the year. Knockouts will bloom constantly throughout the growing period. Mine is deciduous and will drop almost all of its leaves.

Looks almost like the wild roses growing down the road from me along a fence line.

I can tell from the leaf it is not a rugosa. Must be a multiflora. Very nice!

Unknown variety. I grew it from a 8 inch "stick" a friend gave me from his grandmother's favorite rose about 25 years ago. Blooms only in the spring and has an intoxicating perfume.

Is it a climbing rose?

the only rose i have right now is a white climbing rose that i started from cuttings
from a bush from my childhood home. that bush my mother had transplanted from
her childhood home. i have three plants currently alive. they struggle here with the
heavy snow load, and climate. i might have to try wintering them down stairs in our
unheated basement with my fig tree or something. they are in ground now.
no clue to variety name. it must be close to a hundred years its been around.
it was a vigorous climber down in detroit.
the original bush is gone.

rxkeith , nothing is as precious as a plant saved from your childhood home. I sure wish I had one. My mom grew beautiful peonies in Detroit, she had quite a reputation for her green thumb.

It probably could be trained as a climber. Some of the branches get to be around 8 foot tall but I usually try to keep it in bounds by severely pruning it midsummer.

patihum your rose is beautiful, can't believe that's 1 plant. I wish I could smell the flowers. If you send a photo to the rose forum @ Houzz I bet someone could tell you the name.

SpookyShoe So I emailed your picture to my Mom, and she thinks it could be Old Gay, which is from Texas circa 1800's. They have the white eye. Just something you can check out.

I didn't know this rose existed until 2 days ago. Knockout roses are very popular in the Houston area. However, they can get to be large shrubs.
I picked up two of these Petite Knockout roses at a local nursery. They were only $19.99 each. They are purported to grow only 18 in. tall, but I'm betting that mine will be a little larger than that. Anyway they are fragrant and beautiful.

Knockout roses are said to be hardy here but they are not. I wish that we could grow them as I think that they are beautiful.
